esata port work on the D*tv hr 20

Is any one familiar with the esata port being enabled and you can add an external hard drive.

Check out the dbstalk.com forum.

Other people seem to have gotten it to work.

NOTE: Unlike the Tivo based HR10-250 and S3, which use an attached esata drive in addition to the internal drive, the HR20 appears to switch to just the external drive when one is added.

Currently frustrated with many attempts to upgrade my Directv DVR's.  Seems the HR20-100's do not have the ESatA port enabled.  The HR21-700 recognizes  the External Drive but does not operate properly.  Freezeups and the "Do you want to delete now" message showing immediately when attempting to play back any recordings. Live programs freeze after a few minutes.  IOW..totally useless.

On the other hand, the HR20-700 works perfectly with the External Upgrade

Please explain "Tivo based HR10-250 and S3, which use an attached esata drive in addition to the internal drive"   How do I do??

I plugged in a Cavalry CAXE3701T0 3.5" External Hard Drive 7200RPM 1TB USB 2.0 / eSATA. Works great. found it on Amazon.

I have a
HR21-700.

What I mean is that when you use an esata drive with a tivo based DVR, you get the combined space of both the internal and external drive.
When you attach an esata drive to the HR20 or HR21, only the disk space on the esata drive is used.  As far as using an esata drive with thr HR20 or HR21, check out dbstalk.com.
