Hi, all.

I caked a Directv DVR - Hughes SD-DVR40 using a spare 10GB HD from my office.  (just to see if I could get it to work)

After caking, everything seemed to be going OK, but it wouldn't acquire a satellite signal.  On the sat strength page, it will blip occasionally to high 80s or low 90s, but only for a second.  I tried lots of different things including swapping cables, complete resets, etc.  I reinstalled the original HD but I still have the same problem.

I hooked up my old Directv receiver (non-DVR), and it gets a good strong signal.

I was VERY careful when I was swapping the HDs (including static shock precautions).

Has anyone seen this problem, or have I just killed the DVR?

 Thanks.

 Greg

Did 3 more "clear and delete everythings," and now I have a good signal coming in on satellites A and B on all the odd transponders.  Are there supposed to be signals on even?

In guided setup, after I test signal strength, in confirming setup, I get a warning: "Satellite:  101 (A): right side not detected."  If I go to "I'll fix later," I still can't acquire signal info.

 Any ideas?

 Thanks.

Does the phone line have to be plugged in to acquire the satellite signal?

Either it does, or I just have a flaky DVR.  After numerous resets to try and acquire both the odd and even transponders, I figured I'd let the DVR call in and see if it would update the software.

I was still on the test signal strength screen when I noticed that after plugging in the phone jack, all of a sudden I had the transponders back.

This is with the original Tivo HD in.  Since everything's working again, I'm very hesitant to swap the drives again unless it is the case that the phone line has to be in the port for the satellite signal to be acquired.

Any thoughts?

Since no one else posted, I went ahead and put the baked HD back in, hooked up the phone line and sat and powered up.

Everything went smoothly, so I'm assuming that at least for my DVR the phone line has to be connected during initial power-up.

When my FA120 arrives next week, I'll be dowloading PTVNet and will probably have more questions.

 Hopefully I'll get more responses.

It sounds like either your DVR is dying or you have knocked the white ribbon cable loose on the front of the motherboard, which can kill the unit as well.  Power off the unit and ensure that the white ribbon cable is fully, 100% in the motherboard.

The phoneline does NOT have to be plugged in to get a signal from the satellite.

Make sure you are re-running guided setup and selecting the proper satellite dish, single, double (oval) or triple dish.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Hopefully it was the ribbon cable.  The last time I removed/re-installed the HD, I popped the ribbon cable out while removing the HD power supply.  At first I thought I had torn it out and was very relieved when I saw it could be reinserted.  Hopefully, I had just knocked it loose during an earlier HD removal.

The units been running fine for about 28 hours now, but I'll do a clear and delete everything later today/tonight and see if I can repeat the guided setup without the phone line plugged in.

Thanks!

you don't have to c&d everything to redo guided setup.

Just go to messages & setup, settings, satellite

test satellite signal strength (this will give you a rundown of what signal you getting)

or

repeat guided setup, will let you change the dish type and zip code.

Everything was going fine, and then I walked back in the room and it had lost the signal again (or at least all the even transponders).   My regular receiver and my R10 pick up the signal just fine from this same location in the house.

I removed and reinserted the ribbon cable with no luck.  Also replaced baked HD with original Tivo HD, same thing.

I bought this used on ebay, going to see if seller will take back and then try to acquire another.

Thanks for the help!

Yeah, definitely a bad unit then if you've tried different receivers and different options with that unit.  Good troubleshooting though.
