Hello, my name is Chris and I just wanted to get an idea how hard it would be to build a DVR. Here are my requirements: 1) Can record HDTV. 2) Has a cable card that can change the channel. 3) Whats the best software to use? I want something that can download a channel guide for my area. 4) I don't want a huge tower, I want to fit it behind my TV. Also is it possible to record one thing and watch TV on the same box? So please if you can help me, or give me access to some resources I would appreciate it. Thanks. Chris

The last line I get is Kernel Panic: attempted to kill init! Has anyone seen this before? Another thing I noticed a date as it was running 9/2/2005....Did I get an old version?

InstantCake Help Needed

I just purchased InstantCake for Sony SAT-T60 (instantcake-sat-t60-TWP-3.5d.iso). All runs normally up until "Just hit <enter> and we'll begin baking your InstantCake!" Upon hitting <enter> I get this error message: /etc/rc.S: /cdrom/.live/bin/PTVbake: No such file or directory The environment is a PC I dedicate exclusively to formatting tivo drives. It worked fine running the previous version of InstantCake (instantcake-sat-t60-1[1]NR-3.5.0.iso) to format this same hard drive about a month ago and has not been run/altered since. Any assistance you can lend would be much appreciated. Thanks. -->

MRV not working >< Static IP

So I've successfully changed one of my series 2 Dtivos (running 6.2) from dhcp to a static ip address because I was getting tired of my router randomly re-addressing my tivos. The only problem is that, for some reason, my Tivo Desktop server is not seeing my tivo's new address. I know it is locked onto my LAN at the address that I gave it because I can easily call up tivowebplus and/or telnet to it, but I cannot seem to get the tivo desktop server to see it- I am getting Tivo Name = (unknown) address in the Tivo Server Properties / Access Control listing. Obviously, I cannot utilize MRV until the Tivo server and more importantly, the Tivo transfer service recognizes the address. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!! Philip

Hello, In December of 2005 I upgraded my Phillips 704 Directvo with InstantCake for Series2 DirecTiVo Units (6.2). I had a Netgear FA120 USB connecter. All was fine and dandy. About 14 months ago we moved from Portland to Seattle and in the move the Netgear went missing. I've been using the Directivo without a network connection until today when I picked up a Trend Net TU2-ET100 from my local Radio Shack, plugged it into my Directvo, and into my network. The 100 MPS light lights up but not the link light. Rebooted several times and tried both ports to no avail. I see that there are adaptors that are compatabile for drives baked after Decemeber of 06 but what about one as old as mine? Short of a rebake are there any adaptors that will plug and play? It appears the Netgears are unavailable. If I've missed where this has been addressed in the forum already please forgive me. Thanks for any assistance! David

Starting from scratch..... I am a novice at this and really don't want to earn an advanced degree in electrical engineering, but.... What I want is probably what everyone wants and can't find. I have HD cable with Time Warner and would like to hook up a DVR so that I can record the content I receive so that I can watch it at my convenience. I would like the abiliity to hook up a larger hard drive to keep more movies, etc, or ideally, I would like to be able to burn a DVD to use on my other television. Now, I know that there are hundreds, probably thousands of you looking at this and shaking your heads and saying what a dufus, but, I am a senior citizen who recently retired and find that I am watching more television than in the past and would like to keep a library of my favorites. Before you tell me to buy a watzit and tear it apart and hook in zoomit500 and back flush to reset the PRM counter... keep in mind that I am not familiar at all with this stuff. Your help is greatly apprciated. thanks,

hr10-250 ip address

I'm looking for some help getting an IP address on my hr10-250. I using a copy of my original drive so I can always go back to a clean copy of 6.3f if needed. In addition, I'm using a Linksys USB200M v2. I initially had trouble with PTVnet 6.x not installing and generating the "no such file or directory" when attempting to set the flags. I found several posts regarding this, and after manually creating the init directory, and using the "force" option to run the script, everything seemed to install. After booting my receiver, I now have link lights on my Linksys adapter, but I do get an address. I've scanned my network using AngryIP to verify this. I also do not have any unaccounted for entries in my DHCP clients table. For troubleshooting purposes, I have tried the USB200M in a laptop where it does get an address and works perfectly. I've read many posts here where people have this working, so clearly I'm overlooking something or doing something wrong. I was going to purchase InstantCake, but InstantCake is also at 6.3f so I don't see what that would gain. Any thoughts from anyone are appreciated. Thanks

Hello, Not sure if this the best forum for this question, but they are both stock TiVos (Series 2). What I'm trying to find are fans (2 wire) to replace the stock ones. I notice the noise, but my g/f says she can't deal with them anymore...so if I don't replace them, my life will become more frustrating... I've looked locally and a few other places, but haven't found any 2 wire fans. Well, did get one from weaknees, however it's the same / similar LOUD fan, so that didn't help any. Any suggestions? I hoped there might be a way to convert a 3 wire to 2 wire, but again, no luck so far. thanks, Chris

i'm wondering if there is a way to plug the hdd from an HD DVR Satallite tuner into your computer. i've got several hdd's from directTV dvr's and all of the IDE's are fine to put into a regular computer and access as a normal drive. however on the new HD DVR's they use 320gb sata hdd's and those seem to be protected in some way. i've tried multi computers and both direct connect preboot and via esata after boot. preboot. it seems to try and boot the drive and all i get is a black screen with a blue line accross the top. when i connect after boot it typically either locks the computer or forces a reboot. i've not been able to find anything about this and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on how to get around that. btw i have 2 of these sata drives. both are WD3200JS

Hi, I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD, I wanted to take files from its hard drive and burn them onto a dvd using an external dvd recorder, I had a few questions about this process. 1. How do I hook up the DVR to the DVD recorder? 2. I am using component cables (to get an HD signal) to connect my High definition tv to my Scientific atlanta DVR, If i use composite cables to connect my dvd recorder to the dvr (which only give a digital signal, NOT HD), will there be problems when i record to dvd? 3. I am using easy setup mode on my dvr and everything is displayed in 1080i, will this be a problem when recording? 4. Do i need a specific type of dvd recorder? I was looking into the following: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10085730&catid=20210&logon=&langid=EN&test%5Fcookie=1 should it be sufficient to record files? thank you

I've have called Direc Tv and they tell me that since Direc TV and Tivo have severed their relationship, I have to get thier (Direc TV DVR) and stop using my Tivo DVR. I love my Tivo & don't want to switch. I am just resetting the Tivo, it works for 2 days, then loses the signal. Its the typ that can record two (2) channels. Is there something anything I can do to work around this signal problem?

Hello: Someone told me to look for the "cake won't bake" thread but I can't seem to find it. I put the CD-ROM on the MASTER connection on the IDE Cable where my C-Drive normally is and set it to Primary IDE Slave: I used Slave(SL) as described below: there are only 3 jumper settings. It is actually a DVD-ROM which shouldn't make a difference (should it?) Master(MA) Configures the drive as the master. Set the DVD-ROM drive as master if the drive is the only device connected to the IDE card. Slave(SL) Configures the drive as the slave. Set the DVD-ROM drive as slave if the drive is daisy-chained with a hard-disk drive on an IDE card. CSEL(CS) Configures the drive by using host interface signal CSEL (Cable Select). This is the default setting for Dell desktop and workstation systems I then took the drive for the TIVO and put it on the next connector on the IDE cable where my D-Drive normally goes. It is a Seagate DB35 and I set it as "Master or Single Drive." My choices are that, or "drive is slave" (no jumper at all), "Master with non ATA compatible slave" (which requires a...
