I understand that you can treat the Firewire as a digital out that will have the same image as the cable box output, so you could conceivably capture a show that way. Note that this method would theoretically show any guide surfing, pausing, or caller id that occurred during the show's playback.
I am currently using the eSata to add an external hard drive for more recording space. I have not tried removing this drive and analyzing it, but I would imagine it is in a proprietary format.

The DVR that Time Warner Cable gave me has a USB port on the front, 2 FireWire 400 ports in the back, and a eSATA port in the back.
I've read in a few places that there is currently no way of transferring recorded videos from the DVR to some sort of removable media, like a external hard drive or USB thumb drive, but I don't think they knew about the DVR itself.
So, is there a way to do this? Just curious. If there is, then great. If not, then would taking the hard drive from the DVR and putting it into my computer do anything, or is the file system on a DVR's hard drive different?

How would I go about viewing the output of a FireWire port?
If you can, could you try plugging your external hard drive into your computer and see what's on it?
