I am new at this but am reasonably quick to learn. I have inherited a Hughes SD DVR40 unit, without remote and card. Is it possible and cost effective to modify this unit into a standard DVR using Time Warner Cable as the input source. I know I can rent a Scientific Atlanta DVR from TWC for a monthly rate of $9.00.  I also realize that the 40gig HD of this unit should probably be upgraded. Does anyone have a cost to upgrade presuming that it could be modified to not require a TIVO registration.

No, I did not get an answer from anyone. I made the decision to go with the DVR from TWC and have been very pleased with the decision. The Scientific Atlanta DVR is also a high definition tuner which I found gave a beter quality picture than the cable box that I had.
