I have a Comcast DVR and would like to hook another one up to the same TV. This seems simple enough...just split the cable and set up the second just like the first.

Here is my question. How would you toggle back and forth between the two DVR's? Each DVR would be connected to an HDTV via seperate HDMI cables.  I've called Comcast several times and have been told the following:

1. You would use the input button on the remote ( doesn't seem likely to me).

2. You would use a seperate remote for each DVR. Ok, but what's going to stop one remote from accessing the DVR that you do not want to view?

3. Comcast does not support this kind of hookup and would not install it to begin with.

I would like to be able to record 2 or even 3 programs at one time and still have a tuner left for watching.

So can this be done, and if not, what other alternatives would give me more than two tuners to work with?

Your TV remote should allow you to change which input to show: HDMI 1, HDMI 2 ect. If the remotes for the DVR's have a TV Input button, then this too should work.

The remotes for the DVR, if addressable, should allow you to set one up for each of the DVR's. We can do this with DirectTV boxes.

Did you know that the DirectTV DVR's allow just what you want. Each DVR can Record two different shows, while watching a previously recorded show.

I did this for a number of years. The input button will switch between HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.. When it comes to everyday operation of the DVRs with the Comcast remote, you can use one remote for both DVRs, but what is crucial is that you keep the power OFF on one DVR and ON on the other. Otherwise anything you do on the first DVR is replicated on the second (for example, if you delete a show on DVR 1, whatever show is in the same place on the hard drive of DVR 2 is also deleted -- bad news). If you toggle the power on the DVRs so that one is always on and one is always off, you will be good to go.
