The DirecTV boxes are only designed to receive input from satellite, so no, you cannot use a DirecTV box to receive input from cable.

Some DirecTV boxes also can receive input from OTA, but even if the R15-300 can do so, I believe that all DirecTV boxes receive their menu info from satellite, so you would not be able to use it with just OTA either.

If you want to replace your cable company box, your best option is to get a Tivo.
