I love everything about DirecTV except the lack of TiVo. If I could get the TiVo user interface with it, I would switch tomorrow.
I'm getting to a point now where I need to consider getting TV service. I'm not much of a TV watcher, but I do like Adult Swim, the Travel Channel, IFC, and some other channels. I'm not overly concerned with HD content but I would like most of the "standard" channels, and a DVR feature is a must. I just can't be home at certain times just to watch a certain show, you know how that goes - busy, busy, busy.
I'm leaning towards DirecTV, my family's had good luck with it so far and they are recommending it to me. It also features the channels I want to watch. The "Plus DVR" package looks to be what I would pick. I really don't need the extra channels it offers over the Choice package, but I want the DVR option.
I'm not very familiar with which DVR receiver option to choose. Can anyone help me? Anything I should be aware of with the setup/installation process?

I am a TIVO fan and a DirecTV subscriber (since 2002). I recently bought a used DirecTV/TIVO unit from a person that owned it (they purchased it outright back in 2003). I purchased this unit for my wife because she hated the DirecTV DVR interface and font (small size, italic). DirecTV won't activate the unit for me because they say the previous owner's account is in collections. I own the hardware and have been a loyal customer, but DirecTV wants to screw me anyway. I have trouble supporting a company with policies like that.
After this issue came up, I searched the Internet and discovered that there are a lot of people that are having a different issue with DirecTV: they purchase hardware to upgrade, and DirecTV forces them into multi-year agreements and charges a lot to cancel service.
I plan to switch to Comcast in order to get a TIVO series 3 as soon as possible....
@TheCommish:
And how is switching to Comcast different than DirecTV? You still have to sign a "multi-year agreement" with them for the service.
If your only real beef is that you can't get a Tivo x3 then you should have said that instead of making up ludite reasons like signing contracts which you will have to do with every provider since that's how they all make there money.
