Greetings all! I've looked high and low for information on a HDVR2 that was given to me by a friend with no card in the slot in the front. It was dying (suspect bad hard drive) which is why it was shelved in the first place. I've read numerous threads on replacing the hard drive with Instant Cake, etc but I'm really interested in simply using the box as a glorified VCR for Over the Air Programming without a subscription. The two or three shows I'm interested in are always at the same time and available locally over broadcast. Really something as simple as VCR functionality is all I need, but I can't find any information to tell me if I'm on the right track. I'd be comfortable replacing the drive or loading something specifically on the unit, but would like confirmation that this should be possible without the 'okay' from the satellite provider.

Thanks in advance!

-Sam

Is this a DirecTV TiVo Unit?

If so, there is NO OTA tuner in the unit.  Hardware not there.

You can't install an OTA tuner.

An OTA tuner for a DirecTV TiVo would have to be able to tune OTA channels AND have an MPEG encoder AND would have to be recognized by the TiVo software.
