I have 2 Hughes HDVR2's, both running OEM software.  One units drive is failing, if I install new drive with Instant cake & PTVnet.  Will that cause a problem being that they need to be connected to phone line to take advantage of DTV $5 additional receiver plan.

Do you OWN your DirecTivo's? I have a total of 5 DirecTivo's on my DirecTV account, ALL have been upgraded using the InstantCake 6.2a software and PTVnet software. NONE of my units are connected to ANY phone line at all. I DO NOT and HAVE NOT had any issues with DirecTV. The PTVnet software does a few things, first it helps to setup Network capabilities which will enable you to Transfer shows/movies between your two DVR's over your homes wired/wireless network. It also allows you to turn off the Daily Call, this will NOT affect your Guide on the DirecTivo at all, it gets all its info from the satellite signal. It turns a setting in the software off so that it makes what is called a fakecall. This is so you do not get the nagging message about needing to connect your phoneline. I have 2 Hughes SD-DVR40's, 2 Phillips DSR704's, and 1 Hughes HDVR2 on my account, ALL are using the 6.2a software InstantCake and PTVnet. I hope this helps..

2 Phillips DSR704's InstantCaked 6.2a-PTVnet -200GB HD's-MRV-HMO my MP3's, 3 Hughes SD-DVR40's-InstantCaked 6.2a and PTVnet -250GB HD's-MRV-HMO my MP3's, 1 Hughes HDVR2 IntantCaked 6.2a and PTVnet- 2 40GB HD's-ONLY for MRV storage.

Yes I own both units, I was told by the DTV rep that the phone line to both units was necessary for the additional receiver @ $5 month.  He said this was make sure both units were being used at the same location.  Thanks for the info, so now I off to download InstantCaked 6.2a and PTVnet.

I'm up over 700 days without a call on a couple of DirecTivo and approaching 1000 days on the third.

I get the impression they stopped checking the phone calls when the DirecTV relationship with Tivo Corp. went sour.

Good Luck

I would like to be able to use the PTVNET functionality
to 'watch a show on the other box', don't remember
the terminology. If its neccessary, I guess I could upgrade
the other box to also be InstaCake/PTVNET at the same software
release.

I have 2 RCA DVR40's one was hacked using the Instacake/PVTNET
path, it runs system software 6.2; the other was done manually,
it runs system software 3.1.1c. Both do the basic networking fine,
(telnet, ftp, mfs_ftp).

I've never mastered the correct 'spells' ;) to use VI (and clones).
I use Gnu nano on the manually done box with no problems.
it set itself up from the tarball. I need to get Gnu nano installed
properly on the Instacake/PVTNEt box. I did ftp the tarball to the box.
I tried to install it and the installation appeared ok.

I still have to manually tell BASH what terminal type emulator
I'm using (TERM=vt100) and where to find the terminfo files,
(TERMINFO=/terminfo).

I would like to make that happen for each BASH shell without
needing to reenter them each time. On a regular Linux/Unix system
one would put them in /etc/profile or ~/.profile. The manually hacked
box put them /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author which appeared to be where
hacks are installed / called from.

I grepped the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit on the PTVNET unit for "author"
and its not there ? Where does it really live in PTVNET? The file
is there, but I don't think its used.

I was able to successfully run the binary, I do get a curses based
display, but it has a error message on the bottom telling me what
I'm doing is not supported. Since all I did was nano test, (basic
editor functionality test), I'm wondering what a editor that
does not support editing is used for?

I have a screen shot of the screen error message,
but do not know how to post it here.

You should be able to edit your rc.sysinit.author file and add a export TERM=vt100 line as well as a export TERMINFO=/terminfo line.

As long as your reboot the box after adding the lines, the environment variables should then exist with the correct values.

rc.sysinit.author seems to be in a different directory depending on which version of unix you are using.

I haven't  added those specific variables to mine, since I am comfortable with vi, but I have added other ones with no trouble.
