here's an answer I posted in another thread, I don't think the series2 is useful at all without the contract.

OK I need to know the following:
Can a Series 1 or 2 Tivo record programs if you are NOT paying the monthly service charge?
Someone correct me if this is not correct ;)
From what I've read so far, Series 1 Tivos CAN record programs (where you setup manually the start/stop times) BUT only certain models? (Which models?)
Or maybe only Series 1s with "BASIC Service"?
Anyone know? :)
For Series 2 Tivos, I've been getting mixed answers about whether or not they can record programs at ALL with no monthly service charge (manually setting the start/stop times that is).
One person said he had a Series 2 Tivo which he used to record programming with no monthly charge by setting up the times manually. Other people have said that a Series 2 Tivo with no monthly service is a doorstop and can't record anything at ALL ;)
SO who is right? O_O
.
OK so so much for the Series 2s ;)
How about the Series 1s tho? A post in the thread you linked to said Series 1s CAN be used to record programs manually with no service BUT I've read elsewhere that it might be only SOME Series 1s which can do this.
How do you know if a given model of Tivo Series 1 will do that?
And BTW how do you even tell, lets say by the model number if a Tivo is a Series 1? (in case I want to ask a EBay seller ;)
I have a series 1 (HD212) and have never had an acct. for it. I record by setting up time and channel, VCR like. Shows appear in the now playing list with channel, date and time, so you need to remember what is on when since no names show up.
Hope this helps.
Most series 1s can record without service. I say most because there was a release of software (2.0 I think, but it could be older) that series 1 came with that did not support recording without service.
What TiVo has done was grandfather those TiVos that could work unsubbed (those that came with 1.x software out of the box). Those that came with the software that didn't allow recording without subs won't work without a sub.
If it's a Sony TiVo, it will work - Sony stopped making them prior to the dreaded cutoff. Also, I think the smaller TiVos are OK as well - those that could record 30 hours or 14 hours.
