Hello everyone...

We are moving, so I guess it's time to upgrade to DirecTV HD. However, they don't have a box with Tivo. We really like Tivo.

So my questions for the group are are:

Are there no HD Tivo boxes that are compatible with DirecTV (not just now - but with all the channels they are adding?

I PTVUpgraded have my current DirecTV receiver. I really like the web interface, and the ability to extract and download shows for later viewing is important. In addition, I have a couple hundred hours of disk space.

Do I have to give all that up to move to HD?

I am just not so sure it's worth it.....

AFIK, there are no Tivo based DirecTV boxes at this time, but we can always hope. I believe DirecTV has a contract with Tivo that runs until 2010 or 2011, but have no plans to build a Tivo based receiver that is capable of receiving MPEG4 at this time.

You can use you current DirecTV receiver in addition to one of their receivers, which are capable of receiving the new HD channels.  Just ask your installer to run the extra cable(s) from your dish or multi-switch.

I am currently running an old HR10-250 with my new HR20-700. I figured it was worth while just to increase the number of tuners available at any given time.

As far as drive space is concerned on the HR20-700, although it has not been officially announced yet, you can add an external esata drive. I am running a Seagate Freeagent Pro 750GB with my box.

At this time, unlike tivos which use both the internal and external drives, the HR20-700 uses only the external one once it is attached.

I just had the HR21-700 DVR installed by Directv for free.  Total out of pocket for me to upgrade all my DirecTV standard equipment to HD was $19.80, not counting the cost of the HD TV.  This is a really good DVR/DirectTV receiver.  The HD channels are awesome.  I watched the Colts/Tenn game last night and didn't see any blurring.  I watched the Leafs and NY play the other night and I was amazed at how easy it was to follow the puck.  Really had trouble with that with standard tv.

The Guide is definitely different than Tivo's format.  I am still trying to figure out how to setup a Favorites channel list.  The DVR functions pretty much the same way with some minor differences.  Program search is almost identical to Tivo.  One function that I will dearly miss is the two tuner record buffer I had with my DirecTivo DVR.  I can no longer pause a program on one channel and watch another channel.

The remote is a definite upgrade on the DirecTivo remote.  It is very ergonomically designed.  All the important buttons are easily reached with the index finger, (or thumb for you knuckle draggers, lol) as you hold the remote.

Overall, I am very satisfied so far.  I have not experienced any of the lock ups that reportedly occured with the HR20-700 or earlier models.

Hey,

I'm in the same boat.  I have the Series DirecTV Tivo with the ptvupgrade and love all the features. I would love to move to HD but what are my options? I don't want to lose all the functionality that I have with the ptvupgraded Series 2 receiver...but I'd like HD...

Any options here?

I'm in the same boat. I have decided to switch to FIOS-TV and the THX Series 3 DVR once my contract with DTV is over this December. They are forcing me to choose between them and Tivo, and Tivo is going to win that battle every time for me. I tried DTV's "DVR" and despite their customer service people telling me it's the "same thing as Tivo", it is no more a Tivo than a Hyundai is an Aston Martin.
