Hi, all.  I can't figure out how to start a new topic, but since mine is related in a way to this one, thought I'd try this.  PLEASE HELP!  I so-called "upgraded" from my trusty 10-250 to the HR20 so that I'd get the new HD channels when they come out.  I was one of the first adopters of TIVO and have owned about 6 and raved so much to others that I'm sure I converted many to it.  I still have a Samsung combo receiver/tivo in my living room for use with SD.  So, besides having the usual trouble adapting to the HR20 being so untivo-like, and especially missing the dual buffer thingy where I could switch between shows and watch 2 at a time, I have been devastated to find that I cannot now use my 10-250 (it is branded by D*, but for some reason I've always thought it was a Hughes - probably a later-made one since I just got it last August - of2006).  I wanted simply to use the OTA feature so I could enjoy my tivo remote and record and view HD from my local channels.  I have a rooftop antenna.  And, yes the OTA is working on the HR20, but I want the Tivo functionality.  So, once the installer left, I split the antenna signal to go into 10-250 (no problem caused to antenna reception on HR20, so thought I was in for an easy hook-up).  Then I find that my account is deactivated and without a satellite signal I can't hook up my rooftop antenna!!!  UGH!  Now, the next problem is that they were supposed to take my 10-250 because it was on that continuing irritating "lease" program.  But, I have it and want to use it.  Next problem, I don't have any coax coming in from sat. dish to hook into it (the guy put in the 5lnb and I have the bbc thingys, but he did not run any new cable).  I am at my wit's end with this.  Can anybody please help with suggestions as to how I can regain the functionality of my 10-250?  I feel like I've paid so much for all this and I don't personally believe it would be stealing to use my own d*&#ed rooftop antenna with a tivo box I paid good money for in anticipation of using for years and years.  Thanks in advance for any help in solving this.

I have 2 HDVR2's and a DSR600 and I wanted to upgrade to HD and I called Directv and asked about HD and activating a HR-10 250 from Ebay and DTV told me that they are upgrading thier HD technology to provide even more HD content and that the HR-10 WILL NOT WORK with the new HD technology but will still work with the SD channels and possibly the OTA HD channels. So very soon the HR-10 250 will be a doorstop as far as HD goes. probably explains the HR-10 250 price drop on Ebay huh?

Yeap. I'll most likely be getting the DirecTV non-TiVo HD DVR soon.

Keep your eyes out for an article on my experience with a non-TiVo DVR.

HR10-250, Samsung SIR-S4120R, SIR-S4080R, 2 Philips DSR704s (one connected to a Slingbox A/V). One box used the "Zipper"; rest used PTVnet to enable networking features.

How to hook up an HR10-250 AND an HR20 to DirecTV and OTA.

1) Both units must be subscribed to DirecTV.

This is because they need the program guide, but even though the HR10-250 cannot decode the new mpeg4 channels, it can still get OTA, SD and the remaining mpeg2 HD channels (although the mpeg2's will go away in 2008). However, it is only $5 more for the second receiver, versus $12 with TiVo.

2) You must have a 5-lnb dish for the HR20 to get the new mpeg4 satellites at 103 & 99 degrees. Both units will still get the older sats at 101, 110, & 119.

3) You will need a bare minimum of two cables from the dish. To have dual tuners on each unit, you will need 4 cables. Sometime Real Soon Now, something called SWM will allow up to 4 HR20s to share one cable. No help for the HR10, though.

4) To get OTA, you need EITHER an additional cable (from the OTA antenna), or you need to diplex the OTA onto one of the cables going to the HR20 (not the HR10).

DirectTV will tell you that you cannot diplex onto a cable attached to a 5lnb dish. In some situations with very long cable runs, this may be true, but there is a way with medium-to-short cable runs (under maybe 100 feet).

Because of the way that the new sat signals come down the cable in the UHF band, a conventional placement of the HR20's "BBCs" (B-band converters) will not allow the use of diplexers. HOWEVER, if one places the BBC on the diplexed line on the FAR side of the FAR diplexer (between the dish or multiswitch and the first diplexer), the UHF is bumped up to 2GHz at that point rather than at the recommended point (back of HR20). Upside: No longer interferes with OTA. Downside: faster signal attenuation due to cable length at the higher frequency.

5) As with all diplexers, you should use DC blocks at the OTA connectors, in and out.

6) At the output of the second diplexer, you can use a common TV splitter to feed OTA to both boxes.

Note: This also works for people with only an HR20 to get OTA and dual tuner with only 2 cables.

Quadgirl--

How did you expect to get the program guide?  Even with a TiVo standalone that you "own", you have to pay TiVo a fee every month.  Why is DirecTV being somehow greedy for 1) charging half of what TiVo does, and 2) providing additional satellite signals?

I was going to just use my rooftop antenna's associated program guide for my local channels and really the program guide was not that important - no biggie at all to not have the guide.  Just wanted to use the antenna feeds.   Directv is not greedy, just that they "sold" me on this upgrade to the 10-250 just one year ago and  I expected longer functionality.  At any rate, I now have the 10-250 and the HR20 hooked up side by side and am using both.  I didn't realize Directv charges half of what tivo does since my samsung tivo is lifetime subscription, but I'm glad to hear it.

I have a tivo standalone hd receiver with basic comcast and FOUR directv dvr's. My wife complains about the bill but is enjoying all the video I receive. I had MONTHS of hassles with Directv before everything was straightened out but am now happy with my setup.
