First of all I've searched the whole forum and found no threads related to this  thread. I've been searching for the answer of my question on the net for 2 years but haven't found any.

I have a Tivo I bought in Los Angeles (in 2004) and later I moved out to Malaysia 2 years ago and seriously watching tv a bit sucks without Tivo. I know that activation requires subscription, and that's impossible overseas. I'd like to know if I can use my Tivo for recording purposes, and hopefully for the forward/rewind functions. If I can and if it's possible (I know it is), HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? I really need help guys. Thank you.

Well, I have a Tivo Series 2 that I bought used and it hadn't been attached to a phone line for a couple of years. It seemed willing to record live TV, but the problem was that its tuner would only go to channels that the previous owner had been able to get from his cable. I only have antenna channels, and they didn't match anything in the existing list. Then, when I connected the phone line and it discovered that its activation had lapsed, it refused to do anything- can't change channels, can't record, can't view live TV.

So I'd say, if your Tivo was still activated the last time it was connected by phone line, and if the channel you want to record matches one of the old activated channels, then there's a chance you'll be able to record. Otherwise, as far as I know (which is not a whole lot with regard to Tivo!), it won't be possible.

good luck! -Scott

To All I had answered this question on yahoo answers with the advice below, I sent him here for others who may have any better ideas or choices for him.

It first depends on WHICH Tivo you have. The Series 1 Tivo's (Older Model) is the ONLY Tivo that can be used as JUST a Digital Recorder. The Series 2 and Series 3 units MUST have a VALID subscription to Record, Play the already recorded shows.

Next I am NOT sure if it would even work for you since I am guessing that Malaysia probably uses PAL signals, and NOT the NTSC signals that are used in North America. The Tuners inside Tivo are NTSC Tuners so they will most likely NOT work anywhere else. ( I am NOT positive on this though, I know there are people in Europe that CAN use Tivo but I am NOT sure which format is used there: NTSC, PAL, or Other type)..

You should at least be able to check out the Tivo UK section of the tivocommunity.com forum to find out whether PAL or NTSC is used in Europe.

Thank you Mr. Rockratt for the answer. The format here is in PAL. Damn I want my TiVo!!!!!
