I'd like to know if anyone has been successfully been able to copy the recordings from a hard-drive? Is there any utility to access or make the drive visible? or is it that the DVR use a different OS, and thereby a different file-system, perhaps Linux?

I have an external hard drive connected through an external USB to my DishNetwork HD-DVR receiver.
On first connect, the receiver had re-formatted the drive for use with it. When I connect it to my computer, it does not show the drive, however the drive is indicated to be connected in my system devices.
Any comments towards this will be helpful.
