I'm quite familiar with Vudu, and I'm not sure it's going to have any significant impact on DVRs as we know them. Vudu, for a simple explanation, is a movie rental/purchase service. You get their equipment, set up an account, browse a pretty massive library of movies, and rent/purchase films directly. Movies are streamed to your Vudu box, and in most cases (depending on your download speeds, etc.) are available to begin viewing instantaneously. It's a lot more like Akimbo and Moviebeam than it is a DVR.

Given Vudu doesn't really record anything, I'm not sure the impact it will have on DVRs in the short term as long as their focus doesn't change.

If you want to purchase/rent films you can do it from amazon.com with a Tivo S3. I have done it. AFIK, it is also available on the new Tivo HD DVR and any other Series 2 Tivo except for the DirecTV ones. The only dis-advantage is that you have to wait for the download to complete before you can start to watch it.

DirecTV is also doing CE testing of VOD (DOD) on the HR20-700. It is not in the national release of software for either the HR20-100 or the HR20-700 yet. The current list of shows available for testing includes many that are available for free as well as others that require payment.

This does need some further work before it is released. At the present time, DirecTV needs to make changes to your account by hand before you can use it. However, it does have the advantage that you can start watching your show about 5 minutes after the download has started. I have tested this as well and it works fine as well.

In both cases the only shows or movies available are SD at this time.
