I have an original TiVO 40Gb S4040 DirectV S2 hard drive which I backed up using LDA48 mfstools with the command:

mfstool backup -6 -o /bak/lba48.bak

I restored it to a 320 Gb hard drive using the command:

mfstool restore -xzpi /bak/lba48.bak /dev/hdc

The resulting image boots, goes to the "Just a few more minutes" screen, and reboots.  It continues to loop.

If I use mfstool2.0 w/o (non-lba40 CD), it restores a 147Mb partition and it boots normally and works.

Why is the lba48 restore not working?

I think you're missing a couple of switches from your restore command, for a drive as large as 320GB you need to do something like

mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -xzpi - /bak/lba48.bak /dev/hdc

Try that, I think you'll have a bit more luck with it. Let us know how it goes!
