I attempted to replace my existing Tivo harddrive last night using instant cake.  I was unable to move the jumper on my CD drive so I finally just left it in the cable select position.  I think that everything went okay as far as loading the software.  I was able to boot off of the cd and instant cake reported a successful baking.

When I put the new harddrive in the tivo, I initially was stuck on the "Welcome Powering Up" screen.  I checked this forum and remembered that I had failed to return the new drive's jumper to the cable select position before putting it into my Tivo.  I made the jumper change and now I do not get the "welcome powering-up" screen any more.  I am only getting a black screen.  I have tried returning the jumper back to the first position and I will get only a black screen.  I have run instant cake again and tried again.  Still black screen.

Any ideas?

Check your ribbon cable in the front of the unit.  You've either damaged that cable (cable of death) or the motherboard/power supply has been damaged.

Also, make sure you have the video cable plugged into the output instead of the input.

is the fan spinning and the drive on the unit?

Thank you for the reply.

I am at the office now but I am pretty sure that there is no apparent sign of damage to the ribbon cable.  I did check a couple of times last night to be sure that the cable was properly seated.  Can I test it by replacing it with another ribbon cable (ie a longer cable from a computer?)

The fan is spinning, the lights are on and I believe that I could hear the drive spinning is there anything else that would let me know that I need a new power supply?

I know that the video cable is plugged in properly because I am using the s-video connection and there is no s-video input connection for the tivo.

The ribbon cable isn't the IDE cable but rather the thin, greyish-white ribbon cable in the front of the unit.  If it isn't plugged in all the way, bad things can happen, hence it being called the cable of death..

It sounds like you have everything hooked up correctly, if so, it sounds like your unit is fried unfortunately.

If you want to be certain, you can order a rcert from us and send in the unit.

go to our front page www.dvrupgrade.com and put in your make/model and then under Other Products select recert.

Thank you again for the reply.  I will check the ribbon of death.  If I order a rcert, will that potentially fix it (ie. if you find that the power supply is bad, you will replace it (for an additional fee)).

If the hard drive and power supply are okay am I basically sol or are there other fixes that you can apply?

The recert doesn't cover any fixes.  We would take a look at the unt and drive to ensure everything is okay.

If you find the unit still is working, you should contact this company

 http://www.ccscorporation.net/

they do repairs on these types of units and do a fantastic job.
