I am unable to see the SMART status of the drive in the HR10-250... here iswhat I see through tivoweb:

Device: WDC WD2500BB-55GUC0 Supports ATA Version 6
Smartctl: Smart Values Read Failed
Smart Values Read failed: Input/output error

... the reason I ask is that I've had 2-3 lockups where the tivo just freezes whats it is doing.
I can't even telnet in. If I telnet in I connect but never get the bash prompt so have to pull the powercord

flitwick% telnet hdtivo
Trying 172.31.90.48...
Connected to hdtivo
Escape character is '^]'.

Normally I have no problem telnetting in. I'm wondering if maybe my drive is going bad?

PM me your order # and I'll look up your order.

Okay, you do have PTVnet installed and you are using the adapter we sold you so that shouldn't be the problem.  If you can't telnet, I'd take a look at your router or possibly your firewall on your pc.  It's very common to have some program blocking those ports.

Once you get telnet enabled you can enable the smart command by opening up a telnet prompt so

telnet 192.168.X.X (or whatever IP address it is getting) and then typing

smartctl -e /dev/hda

then exit.  Go back in to tivoweb and refresh the page and the smart commands should be enabled and give you an all clear.

is there a reason you guys have it disabled by default?

No, not really.  I personally don't see a reason for it as you'll start to see trouble, reboots and freezing before the smart errors start showing up.  They usually start showing up when the drive is close to death or has very serious problems.
