My Tivo is a Sony T-60 Series 1

After downloading the ISO image of the latest InstantCake and installing it on a new WD 250 GB drive, the resultant Tivo Boot destroyed the Tivo.

After a flawless IC create, I installed the drive and powered on the Tivo, the powering up message correctly appeared. I had to leave the room and when I returned the Tivo appeared to reset and restart, after several flashes the powering up message appeared again. But then a few seconds later the screen went dark and stayed that way.

I then removed the new drive and reinstalled to original one (which was working fine) and now the powering up message never appears . just a very BLACK screen with a flicker now and then. I can hear the drive spin up, but nothing else happens. I checked and doubled checked everything, but alas it's still won't boot.

Just as a test I reran instantcake and tried again, but the tivo remains dead.

It appears that Instantcake flashed the PROM?

The original drive was one of ptvupgrade kits with 3.1 on it and the prom was flashed when I installed that upgrade kit .

How can I fix this situation or is my tivo now a door stop.

Under the drive tray, there is a thin, ribbon cable that runs from the power supply to the motherboard.  If you take a flathead (standard) screwdriver and gently, GENTLY, push down on it, does the unit come out of stuck on the black screen?  These units are getting old and this is becoming a very common occurence.  What you should do is power off the unit, take all drives out and then power on the unit and do this method first.  If you can remove any pressure off of the cable and it stays on welcome, powering up, you should be good to go.  Then, install the drive again and see if it will work.  If it does, then you should get some hot glue and slowly glue the cable in place, so it doesn't move.

Give that a try and let us know if that helps.

Well, I can't thank you enough!!! My TIVO is had been successfully promoted from doorstop :-).

While I had checked those cables before , just knowing that it COULD BE a problem I paid a little more attention. I now realize what went wrong in the first place.

I have a TurboNet card installed and I very carefully routed the cable under the drive cables over to the right side of the motherboard, down the right side over the cable in question to the back side of the MB and then across the back of the MB  and out the bottom. When the drive is returned to the case it presses on the net cable which presses down on the cable in question.  This time I found a new route for the network cable.

Thanks again... All appears to be OK with the new IC'd drive installed.

Glad it's working.

How we run the cable out the unit is cut a square out of the vent holes all the way on the right side, run the cable off the card, around the processors and out the back hole.
