Noob here, I have a question on how to validate if the IC ISO boot disk is good.

I have created the boot disk using Nero (using burn image), but cannot get the PC, or a laptop, to boot off of it.

I have changed the BIOS settings to ensure that the boot sequence checks the CD drive prior to the HD.  At this stage I am just trying to validate that my boot disk is good, since I am still awaiting the arrival of my new HD.

Is it required to change the Primary and Secondary IDE connections and settings in order to validate a good boot disk?  Or should it just boot up?

Or is there an easier/better way to validate that the boot disk is good?

Thanks, Rod...

Are you talking about an InstantCake download?  If so, if you received it as a ZIP file and were able to unzip it successfully, then the file is good.

Yes InstantCake, but what I am trying to do is validate the ISO boot CD.  Neither my desktop or laptop will boot off of the IC ISO CD after it's burned with Nero (using burn image).

What I am trying to understand is if the IC ISO CD should boot the PC if the CD drive is on the secondary IDE controller, and assuming that the boot sequence looks at the CD drive first.

Since my upgrade drive is not here yet, I am trying to verify that the IC ISO CD is good, but as stated, I can't get 2 systems to boot off of it.

My PTVNet disk booted fine with a CD drive set to master on the secondary IDE controller.

Try burning the ISO at the lowest speed.

HR10-250, Samsung SIR-S4120R, SIR-S4080R, 2 Philips DSR704s (one connected to a Slingbox A/V). One box used the "Zipper"; rest used PTVnet to enable networking features.

I tried burning it at the slowest speed yesterday, but that did not work.  Today I tried cabling up the CD drive as Primary/Slave and it still would not boot.

Finally I tried writing it to another CD brand.  Darned if that did not work.

If you want to send me the file I'll try it and if it works I'll mail you the CD.

This is not the place for this question but I cannot find the proper place after searching.

I have HR10-250, upgraded to 6.3a, upgraded tivowebplus to 1.31, have tyserver installed and working.  My system has worked flawlessly for the past 60 days.  Yesterday, I noticed a message saying I needed to activate my DVR service.  I also now cannot watch pay per view.  I tried making a fake call and it appeared to work.  Next, plugged in the phone cord and tried to make a test call.  I tried next to get the number to call by entering my area code.  The call  always fails even though I can see/hear it making the call and says, the line is busy or in use.

any help appreciated.  I think I need to reactivate my service with DTV somehow but not sure what to do.

I downloaded Instantcake for the R10, unzipped the file and burned it
to a CD. The resulting file length is 128,415,744 Bytes or 122 MB.

I am giving you this information because I have been unable to boot
from the CD ISO file. I have checked DVRPlayground and used the ideas
there to troubleshoot but to no avail.

Would you confirm the file length of the ISO file for me?

Thank you,
Scott Welsh

Email send to Technical Customer Support at dvrupgrade.com as of May 11, 2007:

Hello,

I have emailed you before regarding not being able to boot from the InstantCake CD. At that time I suggested you add the fact that the InstantCake software downloaded off your site MUST be created as an 'ISO' file (NOT a 'Bootable Image' file as you write in your Release Notes) from Nero or a reputable CD/DVD writing utility. I confirmed my suggestion to you by creating two InstantCake CDs: One as a 'Bootable Image' from Nero and the second as an 'ISO Mode1' image from Nero.
Result: The 'Bootable Image' CD did NOT boot up as a Linux image but resulted in a "[DR-DOS] A:\> " prompt. The 'ISO' image CD did boot up as a Linux image and allowed me to "Bake the Cake" and thus create a new TiVo harddrive.

Your response to me was that if the problem of not being able to boot from the CD as a 'Bootable Image' becomes a trend then you would update your Release Notes. However, I am telling you that the problem of not being able to boot from InstantCake saved as a 'Bootable Image' has already become a trend (Just check out dvrplayground.com).

Bottom Line: Please update your Release Notes. Your customers are wasting CDs by following your instructions and I contend that the issue is a trend and is not isolated.

BTW: I am posting this reply on dvrplayground.com under the following discussion threads:

Thank you,
Scott Welsh

I have downloaded the Instantcake file and burned it to 3 different brands of media and cannot get it to boot.  I have checked and double checked the configuration of the drives and the PC and I still get the "operating system not found " message.  It does boot my Windows XP Professional install disk so I believe my setup is correct.  Any suggetsions?  Would the OS load from a USB memory drive?

Sounds like you are not burning it correctly.  Please document, step by step, exactly what you are doing with the file once it is downloaded, that may help refine the problem...

I downloaded the Zip file to a folder on my harddrive.

Opened Win Zip and extracted the ISO file to a different folder.

Opened Nero Express and selected Data Disc.

Clicked on Add and selected the ISO file.

I checked the verify box to verify the burn.

Clicked on Burn.  The file size on the CD is 243,508 KB.  The Instantcake I downloaded is for the Hughes HR10-250.

The file on the CD is smaller than the Zip file it came from.  I burned another disc when I created this step bny step scenario and it won't boot either.  I've tried 2 different CD drives without success.

When I downloaded the file there were three available, how do I get back to download again if my download is bad?

I finally have success. The secret is to burn the ISO file as an image not a file.  To burn as an image you have to have a full version of NERO and not use Nero Express because that option is not available.  I downloaded the trial version and burned a new disc and the disc booted immediately.  The instructions need to be more clear on burning the disc especially for a novice.
