Q: What do I need to do in order to be able to "Manually record time/channel" .

It says I must have TiVo service. 
I dont use the TiVo service. I just use it as an OTA recorder. 

I am a linux guy (with little free time). Is there an easy workaround for this?

-Instant cake was easy to use on my TCD240. Thanks for making it available.

You need the TiVo service to use the TiVo functionality; no [legal] way to get around that.
