I 've been copying my tivo 3 drive for over 3 days now.  I used the following...

dd if=/dev/hdg of=/dev/hde bs=1024k

Can I change the 1024k to 2048k or something higher?

Have you looked at the man page for dd?

Google is your friend:

dd(1) - Linux man page

Ok thanks---I changed the line as follows

dd if=/dev/hdg of=/dev/hde bs=5M

Will this work and will it be faster?

The first line that ended in bs=1024k I stopped after 4 days.

Hello mrrjm,

Unfortunately, that's probably not going to make much of a difference. The bs flag specifies how many bytes at a time dd should attempt to read/write. While setting it to higher may make a little difference depending on how the dd program is coded (how much overhead there is in starting/stopping), what your total transfer mostly depends on is how fast your disks are and your transport (network and/or internal computer bus).

Thanks for the info--I'm copying a series 3 drive using the SATA bus.  I didn't expect it to take so long.  Right now I'm at 4 days using the above command.  I'll let everyone know how long it take and if it works.

It took 5 days for the copy.  I used the free ptv upgrade cd.  Since this I found a Linux .iso, booted into Linux off the cd.  Opened the console and used a command similar to the above and it only took a few hours to do the copy.  Then I had to download a mfstool file and expand the drive.  Worked perfectly.  98 hours of HD now.   Very Cool.
