My brother and I both have directv based tivo's and would like to upgrade the harddrives. He has a SDDVR40 running 6.2-01-2-351 and he was wondering if he upgraded the HD would he be able to network his tivo?

I have the R10 so I am pretty sure I can't network mine. I have had mine for over a year and mine is still running 6.1-01-2-251. Why is his version so much higher than mine?

I plan on using the instantcake program to set-up the hard drives. I realize we may need different versions.

I was planning on using western digital caviar 250gb hd's, this won't be a problem will it?

He can also use PTVnet software if he just wants telnet, ftp and tivoweb on the unit.

Different unit, different software, it's really almost the same software, but the hardware in the r10 and the other series2 directivos is a bit different.  You're correct, you won't be able to network yours due to them locking the prom chip which allows the hacking to be done.

Yes, you will need 2 version of the software.

As long as your pc can support it and it's an ata drive (IDE) NOT SATA, then you should be just fine.  Make sure you run diags on the drive prior to upgrading.  Most people think a new drive is 100% good because it's new and that is not the case.
