I have been searching around, and can't seem to find an answer to this.  I upgraded my directivo (RCA DVR39) with the latest Instant Cake image.  At this point, I do not have networking going due to the fact that I am waiting for my adapter(s) to arrive in the mail.  However, I have been setting up a few things, and can't seem to find an answer to this.

I prefer to use a static ip on my network, rather than use DHCP.  I successfully changed the DHCP flag to off and the STATIC flag to on.  I edited /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author with the pertinant information for my network.

My question is, how do I change the hostname of my tivo on the network?  I currently have telnet access via a serial cable, and I have read about changing the /etc/dhclient.conf file, but since I am not using DHCP, it seems to me that would be irrelevant.

I have a fair working knowledge of linux, and am comfortable using vi to edit config files.  I have also set up networking on linux systems in the past (Redhat), but this is a bit different to me.  Would editing the /etc/hosts file do the trick?

I am planning to add a second tivo to my network, and would like unique names and ip addresses for each unit.

The 'name' of a computers is not important only how the name is translated to an IP Address.  The hosts file is use to translate outbound traffic from the tivo to the internet.  So if your goal is to use a name from your pc to connet to your tivo via FTP, Telnet or HTTP you would change the entry in your pc's hosts file (for windows it is in windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

Just configure unique IP addr to each of your Tivos and put the ip address and names in hosts file and migrate to all computers which want to access the destination tivos

Are you referring to the hostname that shows up in the router table?  I believe the default is PTVupgrade-Tivo.  You can change that by editing: /etc/dhclient.conf

Hope this helps...
