I just finished the instacake upgrade/installation of a 160 gig drive in my RCA DVR80. The upgrade seems to have gone well, although I do have a question.

I originally tried to use MFS Tools to do the disk backup and restore, but my original 80 gig drive was too hosed to be able to get a good copy of. All of my other unix tricks failed as well. Considering there wasn't anything really important on the drive, I decided to go the instacake route.

I downloaded the Series 2 DirecTivo w/6.2 image (the correct one for my DVR) and proceeded with the bake. After figuring out how to deal with the screwy dell machine I was using (IDE setup) everything went well. At the end of the "bake" it reported that I had 174 hours of recordable time.

I threw the drive into my DVR, and it booted right up. Did the clear and delete all, went through the guided setup and all seems to have went well. My locals were gone (as expected), but a quick call to 1-800-DIRECTV ext 722 took care of that in about 45 seconds.

Now, here is my question:

Instake reported that I had 174 hours (or so) or recording space. My sys info screen on my DirecTivo says "up to 140 hours" of recording time. Now...is this just the way the DirecTivo reports? Or do I need to get the additional CD ($5.00 one) and enable the LBA48 support? My understanding of everything that I have read implies that the 6.2 Series 2 DirecTivo units already have the large disk support built in. If this is true, then the image that I used should already support this.

So is this just a reporting issue with my DirecTivo, or should is say 174 hours (give or take of course).

The hours in MFStools isn't geared towards every tivo, so it will say one thing but it always isn't true.  I believe the hours that you see in MFStools, ie, the end of the baking process, is for a series1 standalone.  Around 140 for a 160 is correct.

That's kind of what I thought.  It makes sense, I had a 80 gig drive before and got "up to 70 hours".  So you would think that a 160 gig would net "up to 140 hours".

I just wanted to make sure that I didn't miss some blazingly obvious sign and cheated myself out of 30 or so hours.
