Can someone tell me if they see anything wrong with this combination? I have a Samsung SIR-S4120R.For upgrading the hard drive I was going to purchase a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3320620A 320GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM for $110 from Newegg.com.I will get a bracket, power splitter, IDE cable, etc. and will assume the best configuration is to install the drive as a dual drive along with the original Tivo hard drive.I will purchase InstantCake and PTVNet.For networking, I was going to purchase a Linksys WRT54G and set it up for bridge mode. For USB networking I was going to get the Linksys USB200M from Newegg.com (because the hard drive is there). User reviews at NewEgg say that it is version 2 but say that it now works on the latest Tivo OS. Is this correct or should I get the D-Link DUB-E100 (also at Newegg for a little less) instead? Thank you for your feedback.

  1. The latest versions of the WRT54G can't be set to bridge mode; read my article. The ZyXel P-330W can be set to bridge mode.

  2. Get the D-Link; it will work. The latest software for DirecTiVos is only 6.2, which doesn't support the USB200M version 2.

  3. Just use the Seagate drive; don't use the original one (if the old drive goes, you'll have a non-working system).

Thank you very much. I have a couple of follow-up questions:

1. Yes, I read your article. I actually allready have VER 4 of the router running DD-WRT v23 firmware which allows client bridge mode. However, I can change it to your recommended HyperWRT firmware if I have problems.

2. I will get the D-Link USB network adaptor per your recommendation. I checked and I do have firmware 6.2-01-2-381. Thank you for saving me from getting the wrong part.

3. OK, so it sounds like I will only install the Seagate drive and remove the origional one in case everything goes south I just swap drives and I will be back to the origional setup. HOWEVER, since I am replacing the drive do I assume correctly that I do not need to get a new bracket, power splitter, IDE cable, etc.?

4. If I am reading correctly, since I am running 6.2 I will need the PTVupgrade Universal Boot CD 11c. But do I also need the PTVupgrade PTVnet and InstantCake software or is this included on the Universal Boot? I only ask because it says it is the "only upgrade CD you will ever need".

Thank you again, I really appreciate it.

You won't need a bracket or anything else with one drive.

You will need PTVnet and InstantCake if you want to install a new image with networking capabilities on a new drive; the boot CD will not be required.
