I ordered a CD from PTVupgrade, ran the instant cake on it, rebooted and cleared everything, but I can't get the Networking to work.  I'm using a Linksys USB200M (version 1), and I can ping it, but I can't get to it otherwise.  What could be wrong?

Sounds like you haven't used PTVnet which is the networking portion that you need. Instant Cake is just a regular image, no hacks. You'll need to get PTVnet and go through that to get the networking.

I thought that's what I did.  How can I tell what I've got?

Look at the startup screen on the cd, or look at your order information.  It will clearly say Instant Cake or PTVnet.  If you just bought 1 image and all it did was give you a working tivo image, then you have Instant Cake.

I have a Hughes SD-DVR40, I did an Instant Cake on a 300GB Maxtor followed by the PTVnet CD (6.2 for both) with a reboot in between, and I am having a similar no network problem --- my USB200M has no lights lit and no ethernet connection at all. The USB200M works on my XP system, so I know that's OK. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

check your usb200m if it's a version 2, won't work.  A tivo and a pc are very different.

The Linksys USB200M shows that it will work with USB 1.1 or 2.0.  As far as its version, I am assuming you mean the USB version?I remember some option during the PTVnet install that asked me if I wanted to try the high speed drivers. Perhaps that's it? Could I just re-run the PTVnet installer on the disk and change that option?

no, the USB200m has 2 versions.  Look on the sticker on the device, believe it's on the bottom.  It's either v1 which it won't say anything just USB200m or v2.  Version 2 will not work.

  1. Make sure you don't have a version 2 of the adapter (as stivovance said).

  2. You installed InstantCake and PTVnet incorrectly. Boot from PTVnet CD and insert InstantCake when it asks. The way you did it takes a lot longer and is more prone to issues. Read here.

The problem was definately the version 2 of the USB200M. Its pretty confusing that they make 2 different versions with the same model number -- actually its pretty stupid of Linksys because of all the problems it causes. I could not find any other adapter on the recommended list, so I took a chance on a Cables Unlimited USB-2810 USB2.0 to 10/100 Adapter and it works like a charm. All of the telnet, ftp, and web services are working great. Thanks for all the help guys!

I couldn't find any chipset information on your adapter, but since you reported it works, I added it to the list.

I'm curious. Why would the USB200M Version 2 work with a standalone Series 2 yet not work with PTVNet? Is it an issue with the specific release of the drivers or a usb.map issue that PTVNet has not addressed?

Well, I downloaded the PTVnet CD, and installed it,and now everything is working great. Thanks for your help.

wbrosche - It has to do with software version. It *is* possible to use a version 2 with a DirecTiVo, but it would require you to use another adapter first.

Okay, I'll bite and ask a noob question. Assuming that the DirectTiVo was working using a USB200M Version 1 (or some other adapter), then what must one modify in order to start using the USB200M Version 2 with that same DirecTiVo?

Thanks.  For the most part, I believe the current PTVNet CD handles most of the tasks mentioned in your link.  At the very least, I know the USB 2.0 (high speed) drivers are installed by PTVNet.

That is why I am curious why so much airtime is given to the fact that DirectTiVo only works with USB200M Version 1.  I just assumed this meant that there was some tribal knowledge that the USB 2.0 drivers would not work with the USB200M Version 2 on a DirectTiVo.  This seemed out of sync to me since they clearly work on a Series 2.

To sum it all up, your position is that (in contrast to a post from yesterday) the USB200M Version 2 will indeed work with a DirectTiVo so long as the USB 2.0 drivers are installed properly.  Is that about it?  If so, that's good news!

No...if you install rbautch's script, it will install backported drivers that support the version 2. The version 2 is not supported "out of the box," period. If you have a working adapter to upload the script, you can run the script, unplug your adapter, and plug in a USB200M version 2 - after a reboot.

Thanks for the guidance.

Looks like it all leads back to my original post asking about the usb.map AND the backported drivers.

OK not so newbie question. The Netgear FA120 is basically out of production and they aren't readily available.  While I don't have any critsm of the process I had 2 FA120s.  One got take out by a lighting strike along with one of my Sat tuners.  OK enough on that.  Seems the only choice I have having made 2 trips to Comp USA already is a USB200M version 2.  I think it's about time we had a means to easily get that working.   Can we turn this into something less than an act of congress to get these working ?

Don't have a solution to get the USB200M v2's working, but you can purchase FA120's from us here: http://tinyurl.com/fygtw
