I work for DTV, and one of the perks is of course free programming. However, as part of the monitoring process (and to prevent mirroring fraud) any unit we have hooked up has to make calls to directv


I have a nice Phillips 704 model sitting on my kitchen counter with no hard drive in it. I was going to use InstantCake 6.2 and PVNET 6.2 to upgrade the dvr with a 250 gig or so HD and have some nice features not available with normal 6.2 software.

I noticed there's a place where you elect to have the phone connection active or not. I assume this means not only dialing to the Tivo service but also calling Directv?

If so, I need to elect this.

However, is there a way to disable any future downloads of software, say if DTV releases a patch or something that would completely fubar my drive?


Anyone see where I'm coming from and going to with this question?
