Daily Call Error
Hi
I just installed PTVnet 6.2 in my DTiVo DSR704 and for some reason I been having a problem with the Daily Phone Call in my System Information Screen. The error message that I get is this Last phone call - Failed, no dial tone.
When I was installing the PTVnet, I choose to disable the daily call option. I thought that by selecting this option, would not require you to connect your device in a phone line. I also thought that by choosing this option, fools your system and making it thinks that it successfully made a daily call.
Currently I don't have a USB to Ethernet adaptor (and probably would not get one for quite some time). Is this the reason why the system thinks that there is no dial tone when it's making a fakecall?
The reason why I installed PTVnet in my DTivo is so that I don't have to connect my device to a phone line (the room where it is located doesnt have one).
Please let me know how I can solve this problem.
Here is something that is likely to fix the nag message.
Change the file named /etc/password to /etc/passwd
You can do this one of two ways, either telnet into the unit and type:
Code:
followed by:
Code:
for good measure, you can type:
Code:
but it will run automatically at 4am every day moving forward.
Alternate method:
HackMan and type the shell commands:
Code:
(if the "enter shell command" option is not available at the bottom of the HackMan page, you will need to click on the "edit files and set preferences" link at the bottom of the HackMan page and enable the first option in the second column (Show Bash Command Line)).
Then, restart cron by "stopping" cron scheduler in HackMan and then "starting" it again.
For good measure, you can type
Code:
in the same window, but moving forward this should happen every day at 4am.

I don't think you need to worry about it; is the TiVo working OK?

It is working okay so far, I just want to make sure that it will not start to give me a nagging message to connect to a phone line.
And if the nagging message appears what can I do to get rid of it?
Thanks

If you get a nag message, a reboot of the unit should fix it - or you can telnet to the unit and manually run "fakecall.tcl" from the shell.

My fakecall is also not working on my unit that was upgraded with the PTVNET Software. I get serial bash and try to run fakecall remotely and this is what i get then the unit reboots...any ideas what to do to fix this?

Hi,
I've upgrade my DSR704 via PTVNET and Instacake 6.2 in early March. I'm having the fakecall.tcl problem reported in the earlier threads. I've done repeated restarts, and I've found that after the restart, the DVR will register that the fakecall was successful, but the next daily call will fail.
I was thinking of changing the file named /etc/password to /etc/passwd as stated in Quote #40 by Lou Jacob, but unsure whether that fix applied to 3.1 or to 6.2.
Any advice?
I'm having the same problems...Daily call says "Failed"
My phone line is not plugged in....but I want to use the Caller ID feature, so when I do plug the phone line in, it makes the daily call.
I baked 6.2 and used PTVNet on my Hughes HDVR2...it appears that the fakecall.tcl is not operating correctly.
I just found the solution to my problem. Updated my system with Nutkase's Superpatch-67, and it solved the failed fakecall issue.
I tried the superpatch 67 and it just gives me a assertion failure and fatal error and reboots.
I guess I will give up and stick with a stock DirecTivo. I follow all instructions to the letter.
All of the people getting mad at newbies is very frustrating. I have searched various forums for hours and can't find the answers and then if you ask a question, you get jumped on. We all have to start somewhere.
I will say that DVDRplayground is better than any of the others though. There is a lot more cooperation here.
I get the Assertion failure when I try to run fakecall also.

UPDATE:
Mark fixed his problem using a link that I provided (can be found in the Articles section of DVRplayground).

HR10-250, Samsung SIR-S4120R, SIR-S4080R, 2 Philips DSR704s (one connected to a Slingbox A/V). One box used the "Zipper"; rest used PTVnet to enable networking features.
Many thanks to Yog-Sothoth for finding the solution to the problem of running scripts.
The solution was to run these two commands at the bash prompt in the telnet shell before doing anything else;
export TIVO_ROOT=
export MFS_DEVICE=/dev/hda10
Thanks again for your support!
I was about ready to follow your suggestion using Hack man to stop the daily call nag, when I noticed my version of Hackman does not have the restart cron button. Is there another more recent version of Hackman out there, and how do I install it. Thanks.
