Just got DirecTV and the R15 with two USB ports. Do these work at all? I'm interested in copying files to the hard drive of my PC w/o networking. (Thought I'd ask before disconnecting and lugging the unit upstairs...)

The USB ports *may* work in the future, but they don't do anything right now.

The R15 is not a TiVo.

Yup, that's what I was afraid of.

I do know that the R15 is not a TiVo. Is there another DVR that will work with DirecTV AND allow me to copy files to a PC?

Any Series 2 DirecTiVo (with the exception of the R10) can be [easily] hacked and networked. PTVUpgrade sells a Philips DSR704 you can use, or you could always use eBay.

So the R15 is a Series 2 and can be easily hacked? How? A link to instructions would be great! Thanks!

Guess I'm not up to speed on the semantics of this technology yet.

I just replaced the R15 I had with another Philips DSR704 (which happened to come from PTVupgrade). Luckily, the DirecTV CSR let me "re-marry" the R15's card to the DSR704 with no questions asked.

Did you get the R15 before DirecTV went to the lease program? If so, you could always pull its hard disk and use it in a TiVo. :D

Nope, just got the R15 a couple of weeks ago and it is leased.

Seems like there ought to be a reasonably simple way to get that USB port to let me see and copy the R15's disk contents.

You may want to read the R15 FAQ at the dbs forums.

Since this falls into the "Other DVRs" category, I moved it to this forum.

The R15 HDD security sector is written in FAT64 "I think" which makes it so that you can see the files but it won't let you copy the actual video file... I have, however been able to upgrade my HDD. I don't know if anyone is using this forum anymore so if you want me to post how then start posting.

Juxto, I am looking to do exactly what you're offering.  Please let me know.

So how do you remove the programs on a DirecTv DRV R15 if the USB ports are inop?

If, by "remove," you mean "copy to another drive," then that's what I want to know, too.  Been wondering about it for the past three years. Let me know if you get the answer.

Of course, you can "remove" by deleting the programs. You know how to do that, right?

TooleMan,

Hey brother, I have only been able to find out the following.... Popcorn 3 will work with TiVo DVRs because Popcorn has a built in software which will automatically download the stuff from your TiVo DVR. The only downside is the price for a TiVo box.... the cheapest HD DVR is $300 but right now they have an online only special for $199. It looks pretty easy to download the programs with just a few clicks. I have two weeks to think about this since F1 / Moto Gp starts at the end of March. Keep me posted buddy.

We're talking DirecTV R15 DVR's here. Unless I don't know what I'm talking about (which happens sometimes), a TiVo will not work with DirecTV because it does not have a tuner compatible with their service. If you know something different, please fill me in.

I spoke to a Tivo Representative earlier today and a TiVo Series two box will work with a directv dvr or receiver. You will need buy a TiVo Series 2 DVR and connect it to your DirecTv system and go from their. I also learned earlier today TiVo and DirecTv again will partner up to produce DirecTv / TiVo DVRs and will release the boxes during the second half of 2009. Go to

http://www.tivo.com/mytivo/directv-signup.html?WT.ac=mytivohome_directv_direc...

and read the news release. This was also confirmed with a DirecTv Sales Rep. Exact date for release is still unknown.

That's interesting news.

First, if you have DirecTV and must use their tuner or DVR to connect to a TiVo, won't you be recompressing your recordings on TiVo? Quality would suffer, I think. I'd rather use VHS to tape from the DVR.

If TiVo DVR's will be available with built-in tuners, I'm going to get one. The DirecTV DVR is a piece of junk. It has gotten somewhat better, but I never saw "smart" hardware that was a DUMB as my DVR. The number of quirky things I had to work around - and the lack of response from DirecTV's tech support - have been aggravating. And if the HD DVR's offered by DirecTV were anywhere near as bad, I imagine they were forced to junk them or lose a lot of business.
