I recently built a new drive for my Hughes HDVR2 DirectTivo unit. I used the PTVNet and InstantCake CD's to build the disk (started with the PTVNet CD). I installed the disk and started up the TiVo and was greeted with a message telling me that there was an hardware error detected (Error 51) and to reboot the machine. I did just that, but I still got the error.

At first this concerned me because I also had no guide data or local channels, but this resolved over the past 12 hours. I've read elsewhere on this forum that people sometimes get Error 51 before they do a 'Clear and Delete Everything', but I've also read that if I do a PTVNet installation I shouldn't have to do the 'Clear and Delete Everything'.

At this point I'm not sure what to do. I haven't recorded anything or configured any season passes and such. Should I do a 'Clear and Delete Everything'? Other than the time to execute, are there any particular downsides to doing that? Will I have to call DirecTV to get them to re-enable the unit, or will everything just work because I have a valid access card?

Thanks!

Error 51 is usually seen when using a drive from a different TiVo, or using the wrong InstantCake image for the specific unit. Are you certain you downloaded the correct InstantCake image?

HR10-250, Samsung SIR-S4120R, SIR-S4080R, 2 Philips DSR704s (one connected to a Slingbox A/V). One box used the "Zipper"; rest used PTVnet to enable networking features.

I'm pretty sure I've got the correct InstantCake. I just rebuilt the drive this morning to see if the problem goes away and I remember seeing a line indicating that the program was for the Hughes HDVR2, which is the machine I have. I'm going to try the rebuilt drive again this evening to see if I still have problems.

If you are just using InstantCake to build your drive, that error is completely normal. You need to do a clear and delete everything after putting the new drive in your unit; that is the last part of the instructions.

If you are using PTVnet, you should be booting with the PTVnet CD and then supplying the InstantCake CD when prompted. If you are still getting the error message, then it may be that the PTVnet install is not completing properly; pay attention to that because the warnings may give you a better clue as to what is going on...

I was using PTVNet + InstantCake to build the disk. I rebuilt everything yesterday and reinstalled it in the TiVo. So far everything seems to be fine. I don't remember seeing any warnings the first time around, but perhaps I missed something. For future reference, if there were warnings, would they be in a log file somewhere?
