I just installed instant cake on my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Drive -- Maxtor 6Y120P0. Its a 7200 RPM drive, 120Gb.

But, the drive is kind of noisy now that the system is up and running. Its just the normal hard drive clicks, but still a little annoying. Is there a setting I can set on the command line to have the drive run in a quieter mode?

Thanks.

How to Quiet the percussion section

I too have a Maxtor drive and it sounds as if there are elves with castanets working a 24 hour day. I cured most of the racket by drilling the mounting screw holes oversize (the ones in the bracket that holds your HD is a removable bracket) large enough that a 1/4 inch rubber grommet (soft rubber grommets work best) can be inserted in the hole. This leaves a rubber collar above and below the bracket.

I then obtained four screws that were 3/8 inch longer than the originals, placed a flat washer over the screw, reinstalled the bracket by running the screw with flat washer in the grommet hole and tightened the screw until the flat washer just started to flatten the top grommet shoulder.

Reinstalled the cover and hooked up the cables. I have a 90% noise decrease and since the TIVO is in the bedroom, the silence gives me the ability to concentrate on other things... sleep of course .
