Hello,

I purchased Instantcake v3.1.1e for my DSR7000 and successfully completed the installation last week, but now I have heard enough good things about v6.2 that I would like to upgrade. In your instructions you stated:

"OS revisions 3.1.1e and 6.2 are now currently available for SD units. We do not recommend installing 6.2 on your Series2 unit unless you have already received the update from DirecTV. If you have not received it, please be patient, your unit will update automatically. If you are currently running 6.2 and wish to run 3.1.1e, you may do so, however your unit will still upgrade to 6.2 unless you take extra measures to prevent it."

How can I set my DSR7000 to upgrade to v6.2?

Thanks!

Hook up your phone line, and be patient, your unit will eventually upgrade to 6.2

What is the advantage in having to do this over just purchasing and installing Instantcake 6.2 originally?

Historically, it has been our recommendation to NOT install a version of the software that is newer than what your unit has already received. This is based on problems we observed a few years ago when people attempted to do so on older DirecTV series1 models (it would cause confusion when the unit dialed in).

Preliminary testing here indicates that it may not be a problem to go ahead and install 6.2 on units that have never had 6.2 on them previously, but I recommend you be aware of that as a risk.

Thanks for the info. I connected the phone line and forced a call, and the unit upgraded to 6.2 on the first attempt.

Unfortunately now it looks like the box grabs an IP address from my router but I can't connect via TiVoWeb or Telnet. I can ping the box with no problems.

Any suggestions?

TiVoWeb and telnet are not part of the default TiVo software system. If you are looking for that functionality, you would need the PTVnet product.

From the posts below - is it now considered Ok to let a PTVupgrade 3.1.1e be upgraded by DirecTV to 6.2 without loosing any of the functions (like tyserver, noscramble, etc)?

No, quite the contrary. An upgrade of your software revision will leave behind any modifications you've made. Note, I've chosen my words carefully here and used the term "leave behind" as opposed to "overwrite" - this is because the new version of the software is installed in a different partition on the hard drive, installed and then the unit boots to the new partition. All of your modifications (PTVnet, tytool, etc) are left behind in the old partition.

All a moot point, in this case, as we are not discussing a modified system here - just the migration of a "generic" 3.1.1e system to 6.2; remember, InstantCake does not install a modified OS image.

So I just need to purchase the 6.2 version of PtvNet and take the drive back out of the box to apply the networking sw?

Might work, but might not - you might need to backup your system first, and restore it again. Take a look at the official support thread for PTVnet here:

http://www.dvrplayground.com/forum/thread/null/

There is some discussion of experiences attempting to install PTVnet on clean installs of 6.2 vs on drives created with 6.2 using MFStools. Its the latter that we recommend, and developed/tested the tool for.
