I would like Caller ID but I am a little confused, I installed PTV and Instantcake and chose to disable the phone, and have unplugged the phone line per instructions, but dont understand why. if its programmed not to dial out, then why would the line need to be removed?

what is the phone line for other than PPV? when it calls in daily does it check for software updates then Download and install them or does it receive a Sat signal to call in for updates?

Isnt there a way to leave the line plugged in and still get Caller ID without the worry of a software update? I was trying to think of ways around the calling out problem, please let me know if any of the following would work/or if it exists

1) something to put on the phone line at the Tivo that only allows Incoming and no outgoing calls - Something like a diode or a pay telephone ( just kidding about the Pay phone, but that would work- wont dial out without money while still recieving calls)

2) Change the Phone number it dials to your own number so it always gets a busy signal - never actually calls out but can get CID info

3) does the local Phone Co have a way to block outgoing calls to specific numbers? something like parental controls for the phone?
