I was planning on updating my HDVR2s with 300 GB hard drives, but I think I'm going to with 500 GBs, seen here: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822147008 This will work with 6.2 software, correct? I've heard that the swap file needs to be larger after hitting 250 GB. Is that true? Will Instant Cake recognize the hard drive size and automatically implement the correct swap file?

We've only tested InstantCake on drives as large as 400GB, but I don't know of any reason why it shouldn't work on a 500GB.

As for swap file, in spite of the repeated obsessiveness of a few folks at tivocommunity, its irrelevent except for the fact that having one is much better than not having one.

Ironically, some of those folks on TCF think they are creating larger swap files on units such as these and what they are doing is creating a scenario where they don't have one at all.

Not going to get into the details of it all as I am tired of attempting to educate and re-educate folks on the issue, but suffice it to say that you need not worry about swap file size; InstantCake creates one that is 127MB and that is just fine (it has been for the last 5+ years and it will continue to be...).

Thx

Just curious, what is the swap file, and what does it do?

Your TiVo (just like your PC) has a virtual memory system. That means that the operating system (and the programs that run on top of it) can address more memory than is physically in the system. The swap file is used by the virtual memory subsystem to 'store' information from one program that is "swapped" out of physical memory so that it can "swap" in information that it needs when using another program.

If you have a windows PC, the same thing will happen. Every modern operating system requires some 'swap' on the hard drive to effectively run. However, the fact of the matter is any program whose "working set" is larger than that of physical memory is going to run very slowly, as memory access times are much faster than that of I/O access to the swap file of hard drive. With that said, certain operations, particularly within the OS, require the use of a swap file (and sometimes, at the expense of performance).

The reason some folks on TCD feel a larger swapfile is a requirement is because there is a program within the TiVo OS that needs a larger swapfile when it is initiated on a system with larger drives in it. Without that larger swapfile, it won't run properly. This program is a filesystem "fixer" that can be invoked as a result of software corruption.

Realistically, however, software corruption (causing a green screen) rarely happens. In fact, it tends to only happen if you have a defective hard drive, in which case, recovering from it doesn't do much other than possibly buy you a small amount of time to backup the drive (which may not even work, given the problems you might have with the drive).

So, in 5+ years of upgrading TiVo's we've yet to have a single experience where having a swap file of 127MB has ever been an issue; regardless of drive size.
