Its not normal. You do need to ensure your DVR is activated, however. If this is a system that has never been used before, or you've recently replaced your access card, you still need to subscribe it with DirecTV, of course.

Yea, that was it. Duh. Turns out that the Tivo service was SUPPOSED to be activated, but a service rep made a boo boo.

Ok, I got a similar situation, I am subscribed to Tivo through DirecTV DVR service. I restored my drive and got a successfuly clear and delete everything, now when I try to record it tries to dial out. I havn't run PTV Tools on it yet, since I am going to replace the drive tonight with a larger one anyway. So I will try that tonight and see. MY question is, once I use instant cake and PTV Net on the new drive, will it need to dialout to enable recording on my tivo? OR will th ePTV Tools take care of that?

InstantCake. PTVnet.

Once you run PTVnet, you will not need to dial out. Again, please read the instructions; if you are using both in combination with one another, you should be booting with the PTVnet CD and supplying the InstantCake CD when prompted.
