I have a sony 2000 series 1 tivo. I did the InstantCake and have a cachecard installed. The network is working fine. I do not see the splash screen for the Cachecard when the tivo boots. It will usualy go through a cycle of writing to cache. Do I need to reinstall the cachecard software? If so, how.

Thanks!

You should double-check in the installation of your CacheCard; it sounds like the board may not be functioning or installed properly. If you installed InstantCake, you do not need to install additional CacheCard software, its already there.

You'll know if the CacheCard is working if you see the splash screen and see the memory being tested and loaded during the bootup process. If you used InstantCake, you do NOT need to install CacheCard drivers; they are included as part of the InstantCake product.

Yesterday I had to use an instantcake image when my system crashed. It's all working, but no cachecard start-up screen as normally appears. If I don't get the startup screen, I'm assuming it didn't load. I have a Phillips S1 - is that image updated already? I can telnet to the tivo and I it makes the daily call over internet okay too. What should I check or do? The network part of the card is working obviously.

Check the memory in the card, it might not be seated properly or might be defective. Take a look at your log files (/var/log) to see if there are errors when attempting to load the drivers for the cachecard; also check at silicondust.com for discussions on log file analysis... (my guess it that the memory isn't seated properly)...

Before the PTVupgrade, a splash screen would appear and notify me of a failure if something like that happened. After the InstantCake upgrade, the first screen is the "Almost there..." screen with a PTVupgrade logo at the bottom. No indication whatsoever that the cachecard software is present and failing. I took it apart and made sure it was all seated properly - no change.

What do the log files say?

There's a line in the kernel log that the sdram was not found. Well shit. I hate taking this thing apart.

ok - well, my initial suggestions still stand... please check to ensure the memory is seated properly... actually, do a bit more than that - make sure the edges aren't dirty... clean with some alcohol, or a pencil eraser (gently) and make sure you don't touch the edges with oily fingertips, etc...

I'm sure the thing is clean and seated properly - no splash screen and no cachecard functionality. The logs show it is installing drivers for turbonet2. Could it hurt to install the latest drivers from jafa -- or will that screw up the ptvupgrade files? Or should I try the upgrader here first? Or is it just time to give up and live without it rather than risk screwing up the system even further?

You should be analytical in your approach if you actually want to solve the problem. The software works; its been tested, you are not the only one to have used it. Having gotten that out of the way, if you want to actually diagnose and fix the problem, you will need to roll up your sleeves... try different memory, try a different cachecard, try a different TiVo, etc etc... If you want to send everything to us, we can diagnose the problem and possibly fix it, depending upon what it is.

Going the route of installing different drivers, etc is certainly doable, but all you are doing is introducing more variables, not less...

Installing the latest cachecard driver update fixed the problem. The "Almost There" screen flashed for a second, then the CacheCard splash screen came up and the boot progressed normally after that, i.e., the "Almost there" screen came on again, black screen, then the Tivo start-up movie.

As you say, being scientific about it, it's probably something unrelated to the software update. Maybe the electrical contacts were solid enough this time I happened to boot. I'm just happy I got it all to work and I'm happy for your help and assistance.
