The unlock procedure that is supposed to be used for new PTV "net ready" hard drives bought through 9thTee does not work. This procedure is located at:

http://www.ptvupgrade.com/support/netready/

There is no file called ".netready" available for download anywhere at the site that I can find to use with the above "unlock" procedure and of course when you tell it to "send .NETREADY" to the TiVo when utilizing the FTP session, it says "File Not Found".

There is another procedure located at:

http://www.ptvupgrade.com/support/netready/install-core-and-tivoweb.html

This procedure installs "Core Utilities and TiVoWeb" and utilizes the only file that is available at either of the above two locations for download. The file is something called "PTVnetready-tivoweb-1-2.exe". Its installation procedure says nothing about using it to unlock a new PTV net ready hard drive.

Please note that I am not discussing "locked" hard drives; I am talking about "unlocking" a PTV net ready hard drive so that the TiVo can be used to make its daily calls via my network/broadband modem.

Please tell me what to do to "unlock" my new PTV hard drive to make it truly "net ready".

Thanks

It sounds like you are misunderstanding or not correctly following the instructions available on the site. The zero length .NETREADY file is part of the distribution you've referenced. You may want to go back and try it again - these resources have been available for quite some time and used successfully by many people.

After that everything went okay. Unlocked it with the procedure at the first link and then added telnet and whatever else it adds with the procedure on the second link, the link that I spoke of above. For us dummies, it might be nice to just say that the downloaded file should be expanded.

Can't make daily call though; maybe this won't work with Direcway's modem, a DW6000, which hooks to the router just like a cable or DSL modem...my three networked computers connect to the Internet just fine through my Linksys router and DW6000, though. They all have static IP's and the TiVo is the only one that gets its IP dynamically...at 1092.168.1.101 and I can ping, FTP, and Telnet to it with no problem...it just won't make a daily call.

Yes, I am using ",#401" which is pause, enter, and the numbers 4, 0, and 1.

Tried it direct into the DW6000 too, allowed it to reset, all the proper that I know are proper, but no dice, it just tries a while and then signs off with service unavailable, same message whether hooked to the router or direct to the DW6000.

My router is a Linksys WRT54GS. I also tried it with Norton security disabled which disables the Norton firewall and with the Linksys firewall disabled. Nothing doin there still get "service unavailable".

Any insight to be offered? Should I assign a static IP to the TiVo?
I could do that next, but really, if it won't connect with its current dynamic one, why should it connect with a static IP?

Thanks,

I don't think its about being "dumb" its about being patient. It does state that its a 'self-extracting executable' - hasn't been a problem for almost a year and a half; If there is a trend of misunderstanding this point, we'll take a look at rewriting something.

As for the daily call... again, I think just be patient - if it says 'service unavailable' then that may truly be the case; it sounds like your unit is making its connection to the server through your broadband connection.

Congrats on getting your drive unlocked and the additional utilities installed.

Mac OS X and the .exe...

Hi-

Since I'm on Mac OS X, I can't do much with the .exe file, but I saw that you mentioned the .NETREADY is a zero length file.

So I should be able to make my own zero length .NETREADY file and dump it over into the /var/tmp directory and reboot to get telnet access?

Yes, that will work.

Yup, that worked! Thanks.

For the record, you won't be able to see the file over on the other side even if you use ls -a

I'm presuming the PTVnetready.tivoweb package contains the old TiVoWeb, and not TiVoWebPlus?

http://tivowebplus.sourceforge.net/

Thanks,
