OK I'm confused. I want to get my DirecTV TiVo RCA 40 networked so that I can install and use some of the tools available on the internet on my TiVo. I'm not necessarily interested in a bigger hard drive. The networking is the key thing. I have the 6.2 software installed currently.

The PTVnet page says that the drive has to be upgraded using MSTools, which I don't understand. The only thing that MFSTools does to my knowledge is install support for hard drives larger than 137 GB, and can be used to prepare a new drive for your TiVo. I've never read anything that says that MFSTools installs ftp support or the like.

The PTVnet page on this forum says that it installs large drive support too, so what need is there for MFSTools?

Shouldn't I be able (theoretically) take my current TiVo drive (never been taken out of the TiVo) and use PTVnet to upgrade it with the networking ability?

Theoretically, yes. But it may not work. And we don't recommend it. Therefore, we recommend you use MFStools to make a backup of your drive and restore it onto a new one.

OK, but that's not a very logical argument. I should be able to pull the drive from my TiVo and use PTVupgrade to upgrade it. If it didn't work I should be able to reinitialize it using Instant Cake, and then install the PTVupgrade. I'd loose all of my settings, and recordings, but that's not necessarilly a problem. But I might get lucky the first time and get the networking features that I want with all of my recordings and settings intact.

Plus no one has explained what the difference is between a drive initialized with MFSTools, and a factory installed drive.

It our recommendation that you not use your original drive. The product wasn't designed and tested on original drives, only on drives created from restored images using MFStools.

Its not about logic, in fact that may be arbitrary (although we believe that to be the safest way to approach modifying your unit), and its certainly not an argument - its a recommendation.
