I have a virgin RCA DVR40 that originally had 3.1.e out of the box...I let it upgrade sucessfully to 6.2. I then got ready to replace the original 40 gig hard drive with a 160 Segate. I used MFSTools to copy and expand the drive, then tried to use the newest PTVupgrade disk to add the networking and other tools, but the PTVupgrade CD bombed out with the following error message:

Found 6 MFS partitions
crc mismatch len=512 ox00000000 0xfecb6b9e
sector wrong in zone 34149376

and then unable to find software version.

I tried this on both the new copied drive, then in desperation the original drive. Same error. I made sure that it was not the cd, I downloaded it to a separate computer, used different media and used nero both places.

Finally I bought instant cake and tried to use it. It would not work within PTVnet for some reason, then I tried doing instant cake standalone first and then tried the PTVnet to upgrade it...that finally worked. I think there is perhaps some issue with the newer DTV software that PTVnet is not able to handle. I was a little disapointed that I had to buy instantcake as well as PTVupgrade to do what PTVupgrade should have done alone....

:(

If you boot the PTVnet62 CD, you can use it in conjunction with InstantCake (6.2).

As for the problem you had, it sounds like the software on your unit may have been corrupt and/or the backup you made was not complete or contained some errors that prevented PTVnet from working properly.

I understand that you can use instant cake within PTVupgrade CD, however that didn't work. I got an error about not being able to find the instantcake cd, even though I rebooted Instant cake standalone and it did work.

I've successfully upgraded via earlier versions of pTVupgrade with Instantcake, so I have the procedure down pretty well.

This unit was straight off the shelf, upgraded on first phone call from DTV. If there was a problem with the unit then I would expect that the tivo unit wouldn't work or that when I copied it to the new drive then it wouldn't have copied using mfstools, which it did just fine.

Coming from an IT backround, I might suspect that DTV has done something new that might be causing problems and I'm mentioning it since when I did a search other folks were getting the "unable to determine software version" or there abouts...

The error you saw when attempting to determine the software version is different than what the few people who have attempted to install on their original drives have seen. Again, I suspect your software may somehow be corrupt for that very reason. DirecTV hasn't done anything which has resulted in any problems with the software.

As for the not finding the InstantCake CD issue, you may not have specified your IDE device properly, as that can result in that error.

Please don't confuse the handful of posts regarding people having problems with the installation/use of these tools as a widespread problem; most who use the tools have no problems at all and never post here; the software works just fine in the majority of cases, and the differences in PC hardware are the #1 cause of issues.

Although I tried to upgrade by copying my drive, it sounds like the same problem. Don't you hate it when software people blame the hardware? They haven't replied to threads I posted three days ago, but have replied to others left since. Sounds like they're going to ignore my issue so I'll dispute the charge, get a credit, and find an other way to upgrade my drive.
Good luck, grizz...

Not sure why you are expecting a reply that would be exactly the same as other replies to the same questions/observations that have already been made to other similar posts.

Best advice is to take the position that the software does work, and try to figure out what mistakes you may be making, or what is different in your environment that separates you from all the people who are successfully using the product. Looking for ways to blame someone else for the problem is not going to bring you closer to completing your upgrade.
