[Posted here from my original post on dealdatabase.com, hopefully this is a better place to post...thanks!]

Hi,

Before I start, my hardware is:
Hughes HDVR2 (RID is not mentioned anywhere on the box)
Hughes SD-DVR40 (with a RID number under the model number)

Both units have had their original 40GB drives replaced with 120GB drives at least two years ago following the Hinsdale how-tos. Other than that, they are completely stock and un-hacked.

I'm aiming to modify one or both of my DirecTivo units such that I can connect to them over my local network to extract recordings to burn to DVD and/or play locally on my PC. I suspect that once I finally get them networked I'll want to play with other hacks, but for now, this is my goal.

One of the units (the HDVR2) has recordings on that that I definitely want to extract (ie I don't want to "erase and delete everything" if I can possibly avoid it), whereas the other (the SD-DVR40) has only stuff that I can quite happily delete.

I have been reading as many newbie threads as I can and I'm following through the information in this link.
I got to the point where the author recommends buying the PTVnet CD and was about to download it when I noticed that their site says:

Quote:
Please note that this version of PTVnet is only supported on the following DVR models running 3.1.1e of the TiVo operating system

I don't have a phone line so the software on both units is quite old - they are both running v3.1.1-01-2-351 according to the system information screen...which I gather is a few revisions OLDER than 3.1.1e.

So (finally) my question is: is the fact that I'm not running 3.1.1e going to cause me a problem while following these directions, especially since I would rather not have to wipe one of my Tivos to upgrade it?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

If you are looking to use PTVnet, you'll need either 3.1.1e or 6.2. In your case, the operative letter is "e" - and yes, it will make a difference if you only have 3.1.1 (ie will not work with 3.1.1). If you are unable to let your unit update itself to the appropriate version, consider purchasing the appropriate version of InstantCake...

Okay, thanks for the prompt reply, I am glad I checked before diving in.

I should be able to take my unit to a friend's house and let it upgrade to the latest version (which presumably will be 6.2).

Am I correct when I assume that I'll have to do a "clear and delete everything" as a part of the PTVnet process, right? If it is possible to avoid it for one of my units, I'd like to do so to save some of the recordings that I already have, but if this is unavoidable I can live with it.

Thanks again,
Jon

There is no need to do a 'clear and delete everything' after using PTVnet.

Ahh sorry, my mistake, I had thought that was required. I'll get my unit upgraded this week then give PTVnet a try.

Thanks again for the prompt answers.
