The PTVnet software CD is designed as a DIY utility for people with moderate PC technical ability, and who want to quickly and easily build or configure a drive (or two) for their Series2 DirecTV DVR with USB networking access.
Once configured and enabled, bundled software utilities (telnet, ftp, TiVoWebPlus, linux support utils, etc) can be accessed via your home network (or wide area network if your router is properly configured). Your unit will be configured with a DHCP address, however once it is accessible via the network, can be configured with a STATIC IP address.
The benefits of a network accessible DVR are significant to TiVo enthusiasts. Direct access to the TiVo user-inteface via a web browser allows the user to remotely schedule recorded events, and manage/annotate/delete event information by directly interacting with the TiVo database resident on your system. For intermediate and advanced users, telnet/ftp access, as well as additional Linux support utilities, give users the opportunity to treat their DVR as a Linux server on the network. They can install and configure a variety of additional publically and freely available modifications for futher enhancing their end-user experience.
The PTVnet Utility CD is NOT a means to circumvent the data encryption used by DirecTV for storage of recorded material on the DVR, nor is it product which installs an alternative software version on your DVR to allow you access to features only intended for standalone units.
The PTVnet Utility CD IS an enhancement utility to designed to effectively and legally integrate your DVR to your home network, and give you the opportunity to explore an enhanced relationship with your DVR.

Product Description
The PTVnet software CD is a linux boot CD offering several key capabilities useful to upgraders and TiVo enthusiasts. For those interested in networking their Series2 DirecTV DVR's the PTVnet software CD provides a unified, menu-driven user-interface to aid in modifying an existing TiVo system drive, or assist in creating a new system drive of most any size, when combined with a user-supplied backup image or standard InstantCake image.
The PTVnet software CD is designed to be a standalone CD to aid in modifying an existing TiVo drive prepared with the prerequisite TiVo system software -- this version of the PTVnet software CD requires version 6.2 to be present on the supplied drive(s). Alternatively, the PTVnet software CD can be used in conjunction with a comparable backup image created with mfstools, or with an unmodified InstantCake CD, to create a new drive set from new factory hard drives.

USB 1.1 native drivers

large drive support (now native within 6.2)

PTVnet application suite

enhanced InstantCake support
USB 2.0 Networking
The PTVnet CD can install and enable USB 2.0 networking drivers so that your DirecTV DVR can be connected to a home network. Using a USB Ethernet adapter, such as the Netgear FA120, and Hawking UF100, and older model (not version2) Linksys USB200M devices, you can connect your DVR to any network and it will obtain an DHCP assigned IP address from practially any standard router. For those interested in wireless connectivity, use of a bridging device or gaming adaptermay also be added, such as the Linksys WGA54G.
USB 1.1 Networking
The PTVnet CD can enable native USB 1.1 networking drivers so that your DirecTV DVR can be connected to a home network. Using a USB Ethernet adapter, such as the Netgear FA120, you can connect your DVR to any network and it will obtain an DHCP assigned IP address from most any standard router. For those interested in wireless connectivity, use of a bridging device or gaming adaptermay also be added, such as the Linksys WGA54G. Installation of basic networking drivers is intended as a facility for applications support (see PTVnet application suite below), not for completion of the daily call - please see Advanced Features for more discussion.
Large Drive Support (LBA48)
Large drive support (LBA48) is now native within 6.2 of the DirecTV/TiVo operating system software. Previous versions of the software did not include this, so LBA48 functionality was included with the earlier version of PTVnet.
With that in mind, the largest single drive recommended for use with the PTVnet CD is now 400GB (or 2x400GB drives, total).
PTVnet Application Suite
A full description of most of the applications and utilities installed by the PTVnet CD is discussed as part of the complete PTVnet kit description

TiVoWebPlus 1.2.1 - as of 9/10/2005

HackMan 4.0 for TiVoWebPlus

YAC and Elseed (caller id utils)

telnet/ftp

Busybox Linux Utils

Other miscelleneous and useful tools
Application Suite Synopsis
Details of the installed applications can be found and discussed here. TiVoWebPlus is a web server components installed and configured for access through a standard web browser (IE or Firefox, preferred). HackMan is a hack management module integrated with TiVoWeb components to make it easier to obtain the status of running/installed mods, enable/disable them, and also do basic and safe editing of system startup files. YAC and elseed are caller-id support utilities designed to display caller-id info on your screen when activated. TELNET/FTP are standard Linux utilities for remote shell access and file transfer (FTP does not enable transfer of video content which is stored differently than standard TiVo operating system files and applications). Busybox is a lightweight UNIX toolbox that provides the functionality of many common utilities for your TiVo.
Note that some features of TiVoWebPlus which are functional under 3.1.1e are not currently available under 6.2; research indicates that the features not available are not commonly required by general users. If features such as the "web remote" are important to you, please use PTVnet for 3.1.1e systems.

Enhanced InstantCake Support
The PTVnet CD configuration tool is expected to be used in conjunction with a one or two drive set configured with 6.2 of the operating environment. For those using InstantCake, or those with their own 6.2 backup, the CD boot scripts will give the user the option to supply one or two blank drives, and execute a support script (an enhanced version of the standard InstantCake software) to restore the image to the new drive set.
In addition to this giving the end-user the opportunity to create a drive set utilizing the full capacity of the supplied drives, additional support options are also embedded into the build script -- user may choose to not expand their drive image, and/or not increase the default size of swap space. This can be useful if restoring to an original-sized TiVo drive is required; a current "shortcoming" of the standard InstantCake build scripts.
Advanced Features
Other advanced features of the PTVnet CD and the configuration scripts allow for the enabling / disabling of ptv_flags read by system startup files at TiVo boot time. The full structure and syntax of ptv_flags and the supporting flag_swap script will be documented and supported in a separate thread at a later date. Flags configurable by the PTVnet CD installation include automatic enable/disable of TELNET, FTP, DHCP (static may be configured via remote access with additional instructions to follow), FIRSTIME boot (InstantCake or 3rd party image builds alleviates requirement for clear and delete everything), AUTOMATIC upgrade of software (allows prevention of auto upgrade to preserve existing hacks until future OS releases are supported), and other potential 'aftermarket' hacks TBD.
Sources of Material
For the most part, the PTVnet software CD contains freely and publically available components found at popular enthusiasts' sites such as DDB and TCF. Some of the technology is exclusively licensed for commercial redistribution, but is also freely and publically available for end-users. Much of the CD's value contains hand-coded scripts designed to seamlessly integrate and implement components of the application, as such work is no longer considered to be trivial by all but those with advanced technical capabilities, and extreme patience.

Disclaimer
We have done an extraordinary amount of testing of this product internally. It has been tested on single drive, and dual drive units, and on a range of drive capacities, brands, etc, and we are very comfortable that the product is safe for use in your TiVo. However, with that said, we can make no assurance of your success or the stability of your TiVo once the tools have been installed and are running. We highly recommend that you have a good backup, and the skills/resources to use it should you need to do a full restore of your system. The PTVnet Utility CD has been developed, with the notion that it might be used on previously upgraded systems, and we have tested it in that fashion, but once again we cannot guarantee your recordings and settings will remain intact (if the product is used properly, it should); so PLEASE make sure you have a backup.
