My daughter has a series 1 TIVO (Not DirectTV), which has a failed 40GB HD. I haven't received it yet, but she called TIVO service & they said it was a Dead HD. What I need to know is can we use InstantCake to format a new HD and allow her to use the unit. She had a "lifetime" subscription, would she lose it or is there some way to insert the unit's serial number?

I have been in computers since 1965, and building them since 1994 and have done chip level repairs sans circuit diagrams since the early 80's, so the technical stuff is old hat. I have a computer that is well set up to do the tasks and can install a Linux distro if I have to.

Also, is it possible to network the unit on an intra-net (10/100)?
