Hello,

I am trying to do a couple things that DirecTV won't support...

I have a Samsung SIR-S4120R Series 2 DirecTV Unit

1. Network my TIVO unit so I can get rid of my home phone. Cell phones are all I use currently by I still have o pay $25.00 per month just so I get updates.

2. Be able to transfer my existing programs that have been recorded to my computer and burn them onto a DVD for safe keeping and for viewing though my DVD player instead of viewing though my Tivo. This will allow me to clean off my TIVO Unit. However, I don't want to use the recorded shows to sell, only for private use.

3. If possible, put in a larger hard drive to provide more recording space, however, this isn't completely necessary. Also, I have heard that only a certain type of hard drives can be used, is this true?

4. Do all of this a cheaply as possible.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated

Chris

1. You can do this using PTVnet - you can either purchase a preconfigured drive or use our DIY utilities if you are so inclined.

2. You won't be able to do this. Things you've already recorded are encrypted. Moving forward you *can* do this if you install the right hacks on the drive. You can use PTVnet as a starting point, but you'll need to do some digging over at dealdatabase.com for information on how to configure your system so that recordings aren't encrypted and you can archive them to your PC for future use.

3. Standard IDE drives are what people use. Our kits include a larger capacity drive. You can use your own drive if you go the DIY route.

4. You get what you pay for -- it can be done for FREE if you do your homework and take your time; components of the solution are available for a price. The less you know/do yourself, the more you have to pay.
