Yesterday, I installed the PTVnet 250GB hard drive in my DirecTV/TiVo HDVR2. Everything worked perfectly at first, but after about 2 hours the background animation in the TiVo menus went black -- and when I went to Live TV, video is black as well.

Audio still works. Channel banner still appears. I can see the playback bar and it responds to rewind and fastforward commands normally -- just the video is black on ALL channels.

I tried playing back a recorded show -- also black.

Menus all work -- but the background animations are all missing. The menus appear over a black screen.

I rebooted via the menu -- video came back after the reboot and everything worked perfectly for about 2 hours. Then -- same thing happened again. I was watching live TV, and video froze. When I pressed Live TV again to switch to the other tuner, the video is black. Went to menus -- all menus work, but backgrounds are black. No video until I rebooted again (this time by unplugging for 15 seconds.)

After the hard reboot, everything works fine again for a couple of hours, then while watching a recorded show, the video goes black again. I do know this show got recorded properly, because I have already watched it all the way through without any problems.

I searched very carefully through all the forums, but so far have not found a mention of this issue. If anybody can offer some ideas I would be very grateful.

This does seem very odd. If you are certain that all your cables are hooked up correctly, external to the box, I'd start looking inside - you may have a bad cable, something loose, or perhaps its defective hardware.

Same advice as to the previous poster. Also, you might try going throught the satellite setup to ensure the right type of dish, right number of connections, etc are selected...

I checked all the connections and reran sat setup to make sure everything was correct and it was. Put the original tivo hard drive back in and it worked fine. All channels and video. I also don't have the locals. I read the threads where the locals need to be updated. Should I call direct and have them update? Could that be a problem?

Locals can take up to 24-hours to update; you can call DirecTV to expedite that; it could be the same issue, but not really sure. If you do call them, do not tell them you've upgraded your unit, they will not help you.

I sure wish this was a sticky!
If you call DirecTV,
to get locals on dtivo
a call to 1-800-directv ext. 721 will also work.
1-800-347-3288 ext.721
thats all you do is call, then you hang up!
it generates the update to your Tivo,
blink and you will miss your locals coming on!

I have done this at least 6 times, worked every time...

I know about the local channels. What I am having problems with is I am getting a black screen on all channels. There is sound, but no video. I change HD to the original drive, and it works fine.

My money is still on something possibly not being set up right.

You might also try a 'clear and delete everything' if you are willing to lose whatever (if anything) is currently on the unit.
