Hi,
I'm getting ready to install my Ptvnet upgrade kit [with larger drive] and I've got an oddball networking question before I begin.

I've presently got 4 XP computers connected [using USB NIC dongles] to a hub, which is in turn connected to a cable modem. The computers are not networked together, [and never really needed to be]. Works fine for internet access. :)

I want to connect the Tivo to [only] one of the computers.
I've already installed a internal NIC card inside the computer in question to connect to the TIVO.

The question is: will this work?

In other words, can this one computer be connected to a hub [with a USB NIC] for internet access and ALSO be connected to the Tivo [with an internal NIC card]?

I guess I'll need a Cat5 crossover cable to at least try it.

Yep it'll work

There's a good thread here that details some of what you'll need. Definitely a crossover cable, and some fiddling with IP addresses.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

It would have taken me years to find that thread by searching. :)

So, I ended up buying a Linksys BEFSR41, which already had all the hardware and stuff I needed, built into one unit. :)

As a note, To my [newbie] surprise, it wasn't at all necessary for me to use two different networking connections to the single PC. And it's just as well, because trying to make that configuration work was way beyond my networking/computer skills anyway.

All of my PCs are now communicating with the Tivo and the cable modem just fine.

Perfect! :)

I had lost all communication with the Tivo for awhile. Except for the leds being lit, there was nothing in the Linksys router or angryip to indicate the Tivo was on the network. :(

I learned that a pull-the-plug reboot on the Tivo was the only way to restore it.

Works fine now again. :)

So, repeatedly restarting the system from Tivo's onscreen menu did no good... evidently, it's just not as effective as a pull-the-plug reboot. (?)

Anyway, I want to learn about using telnet/serial connection to talk to the Tivo, in case of emergencies. I saw a step-by-step page describing how-to a few days ago, I can't find it now. Can someone point me to it?
