What you can do is edit rc.net, and append the line
hostname mytivo
to the end of the script. rc.net is always run on boot so the script hostname will run and give the box its name. If you run either nic_config or PTV_nic_config (also saw a reference to but didn't find tivo_nic_config), then rc.net is overwritten and your edit is gone. Obviously, you can substitute your own name for "mytivo"... ;-]

I hope one of the Linux masters knows the answer for this. My Tivo is the only Linux machine on my network. When I check the status of my DHCP server through the router, the PC's show up with the computer name and the MAC address. The Tivo shows up as (null) and then the MAC address. Is there some linux command line utility to "name" the Tivo? It's completely meaningless as far as the operation of all my computers, but I would like to just "name" my Tivo as "Tivo" for the benefit of the DHCP server. How do I do it? Should I not do that?
