Greetings. Pulling my hair out. Installed a brand new cachecard into an upgraded Philips SA TiVo. The card works fine, as does its Internet connection so long as I'm hard wired Ethernet into my home LAN. I have a Belkin F5D7330 802.11g wireless bridge and a Linksys AP/router. The bridge works complete fine as I can plug it into any PC on my network (bridge is configured for my network) and that PC can surf the web - plus, even when attached to the Tivo, I can still access the Belkin's internal web server from any other computer on my network. But like I said, if I plug the Tivo into the bridge, I can access the Bridge from my network, but not the Tivo, nor can Tivo make daily/test calls. Plug Tivo back into the LAN, all's honkey dory.

Therefore, it's safe to say that both Tivo and the Belkin are properly configured for my network, but there seems to be some disagreement between the two. Any troubleshooting tips here? Strange, huh.

Here are my Tivo nic_config_tivo details:

Here's my Tivo's inet route table:

Thanks!

It sounds like you are doing everything right. Do ensure that when you connect your TiVo to the wireless device, you reboot it (use the remote, don't power cycle it). The DHCP client is not 'active' as it is on an XP system; it only runs and queries the IP address when it reboots, or the DHCP client is run manually.

You might want to get a serial cable so that you can have console access to the unit - that may help you with your troubleshooting.

Ensured. Any other ideas? I really appreciate it.

Is it an ad-hoc or infrastructure network setup? If the bridge is set up for ad-hoc you can do file sharing. If it's set up for infrastructure, then the Tivo can just share the Internet connection. Read the manual for your bridge for instructions on setting it up on your network.

Infrastructure mode. In any event, like I said, the bridge works fine when connected to laptops and other computers, no problemo. It's just the communication between the Tivo and the bridge that's causing be trouble. Tivo on it's own, hooked into the LAN via Ethernet works fine too, however. Really strange. I can literally unplug the bridge from Tivo, plug it into a computer, and everything works fine, and then plug it back into the Tivo, soft reboot or not, and no access to the Tivo, although access to the bridge's web server from any computer on the network is fine, implying that the bridge on the whole is functioning properly.

Nevertheless, I gave up last night. Returned the Belkin bridge, bought a Linksys, configured in about 5 minutes, and Tivo works fine wirelessly now. I guess that even though they say all 802.11x devices are interoperable, they're really not (I have a Linksys AP and other Linksys networking components). So let that be the lesson learned: stick with a ubiquitious brand throughout your network.

Thanks!

I again see the recommendation to "soft" reboot the TIVO. My Directv TIVO is increasingsly not coming back up after a soft reboot. DirectV user manual suggests taking unit offline to travel (now showing programs...). Would they do so if this was a problem?

Would like to stay away from hard reboot (still using wireless game adapter), and wonder if it will eventually lead to problems - given the soft reboot is not getting things done. Also, would taking it down "hard" (unplugging) while in standby mode make any difference ?

I think you've misintpreted. There is no recommention to "soft" reboot the TiVo. Rebooting is rarely the solution to anything; rebooting is treating a symptom, not the problem. The context of my recommendation was ensuring that the TiVo was brought up at the correct time. If the TiVo is fully booted PRIOR to the availability of the DHCP server, it may miss its opportunity to get an IP address.

In your case, I think you have intermittent problems associated with your wireless network. Aside from going wired, which we've already established is not an option in your case, you might focus on signal strength issues - perhaps look into a repeater or relocating your router. I think what WAS established in this thread was some sort of compatibility issue with the Belkin wireless bridge.

So for the record, rebooting is rarely the solution to problems like this; in fact, it can be the cause of more problems, if its done improperly or at the wrong time.
