I have changed from a wireless connection to a hard wire connection in an attempt to increase my transfer speed from my tivo to my pc. I cant get a connection with the tivo. My router shows an active link between the router and the tivo. The DHCP has assigned an ip address. I still can't get the connection.

Is this with a TurboNet or a CacheCard?

Sounds way too slow. Could be a bad cable... also if you are using a hub (instead of a switch) you could have other things competing for traffic. Might want to isolate the traffic, if possible.

Is this one of our kits?

Yes it is one of your kits. I use a linksys wireless b router. It has 4 hardwire slots. I tried two different cables and got the same results. I ran the software to detect all ip's in use and no conflicts. I opened the DHCP page of the router to verify the ip address that was issued and it is correct. Tivoweb appears to work very fast. Tytools on the otherhand is very slow.

comparison to tivoweb isn't going to be very helpful as its not bandwidth intensive.

you might try using ftp just to move some big files back and forth to the unit into / from the /var/tmp directory -- if the transfers are no faster, then you'll know its a network problem.

beyond that, it could be something specific to the tivo... perhaps the network card isn't seated all the way (although it probably wouldn't work at all of that were the case)... you might also look at the coupler or the patch cable if you haven't replace or subsituted that.

it does sound a bit slow - unlikely that its a hardware problem with the cachecard (have never seen a 'slow' network card before, i suppose there's a first for everything, though), my guess is that is it something related to the network, or perhaps other activity on the tivo that is slowing things down.

Ok,

I'm not real savy with telnet or ftp. Can you give me a basic runthrough on how to start that process.

I can't. If you do want to go down that road, a good place to start is here:

http://www.ftpplanet.com/ftpresources/basics.htm

Just pick out a binary file on your PC (any old file, even a file you archived using tytool is fine) and move it to your TiVo into /var/tmp... and time the transfer... then pull it off your Tivo, and time the transfer....

Again, the times themselves aren't particularly meaningful... just another data point as far as analyzing what the bottleneck might be...

Ok,
I ran WS ftp and successfully transferred a 4mb file to the tivo. The transfer rate was 768 Kbps and took 60 sec. I then reversed the direction and transferred it back to my pc. The transfer rate was 792 Kbps and 61 secs. How is this speed.

I don't have a system up and running here right now to compare, but it sounds slow, and to be about the same speed your reported through tytool (tytool should be a little slower than this). My opinion is that you might have a bottleneck on your network somewhere; that it should be faster. Next time I have a system up and running here, I will do a short benchmark and let you know. Probably won't be until later this week.

I'd keep looking for potential flaws in your network - it sounds like you have a pretty simple setup, though. Possibly try a differen router, if you can... a different pc... replace anything you can to see if you can isolate any problems...

Ok,

I will try a different pc. I only have two pc's on the network plus the WGA11b game adapter. I routinly get 3000 kbps download speed from the internet through this router. I go to www.dslreports.com and use their speed tests. My system is always at the top of the scale. I ran angry ip and didn't find a problem. I'll check back next week for your benchmark results.

One more thing. What Cachecard version should the splash screen show when I first boot up the tivo. How can I tell what cachecard drivers I am currently running. I purchased this card from you on Feb 6, 2005. Thanks

The splash screen will always say 1.0. The drivers should be clost to being the latest ones.

I just ran a quick test on my own unit here - drivers haven't been updated in awhile; moved a 9+ MB file to it and from it using ftp... put speed was close to 2MB / sec. get speed was about 1.4 MB / sec.

Using TiVo Client Alpha #9 rel 18, get speed (multiplex mode) about 2.75MB /sec.

If you want to set up your unit so we can get to it via telnet and ftp, I can reinstall cachecard drivers and server software. To do this, you'll need to find out your external ip address (www.myipaddress.com) and configure your router so ports 21,23 (and 80) all point to the IP address of your TiVo. Test it out with your ftp client and connecting to your EXTERNAL ip address. Or open a dos window and use telnet and ftp to connect to it... then please send me private message with your IP and I can log in and reinstall stuff.
